New Defence Pact May Shift Power Balance

The Joint Defence Organisation ?Not A New ECSTO?, Believes Analyst

    September VI, 2013 AD
    Article By: Marius Aventinus

Davishire and the Balkan Socialist Federation have formed a new defence pact. The Joint Defence Organisation (JDO) seeks to be an open-to-join organisation that offers security guarantees for mutual military assistance at times of crisis. The JDO came to being after high-level talks between Davishirians and Balkans.

The JDO is the first attempt in creating a new and official military treaty since last October, when the European Collective Security Treaty Organisation, or ECSTO, was disbanded. The ongoing Dromund Kaas War has seen the ?Coalition of the Willing?, but this group of warring nations is a loose confederation with a common foe rather than a permanent treaty organisation with clearly defined command structures and hierarchies, defines Flavius Terentius from the Pacifican Institute of War and Peace Studies.

The JDO in its current incarnation differs from its late predecessor in ?one but crucial? aspect, says Terentius: ?The ECSTO had key regional nations like the Grand German Reich, Rhine Ruhr, and Os Corelia among its signatories. Military superpowers have not yet entered this new treaty. This may not be so surprising when we keep in mind the initial difficulties Davishire experiences when joining the European Union. The nuclear weapons dispute with Os Corelia and Halsberg in particular is still in fresh memory. From this perspective, it's not surprising to see see that Davishire and the Balkan Socialist Federation, both relatively new additions to the European Union, have find each others, rather than the ?older? military powers of the EU.?

Will the JDO result in a shift of power balances in the region? Terentius encourages calm. ?At least at the moment the JDO doesn't have a major effect on regional military statistics. Davishire has also recently taken several laudable steps to establish itself as a respectable member state of the European Union, which has led to considerable reduced intraregional tensions. The evolution of the JDO should be followed with interest, though. Realities are such that if the organisation ends up growing in members, while the older military superpowers stay out of it, it will have direct and indirect impacts on overall military policies in Europe.?

    Cultus Romanus Deifies Julia Glorius

The Traditional Religion Has Not Declared Apotheosis Since Early 19th Century

    September VII, 2013 AD
    Article By: Marius Aventinus

The supreme head of Cultus Deorum Romanorum, or the Cult of the Old Gods, Pontifex Maximus Julius Victorius Acraiphicus has declared the late President Julia Glorius a patroness deity of Pax Aurea. The ceremony was held in the presence of the Collegium Augustum, or the college of the high priests, and hundreds of faithful laypersons, in the Pantheon of Pacifica.

The decision of the Collegium has come as a stunning surprise to most of Pax Aurea. No state leader has been deified by the followers of the Old Ways since the early 19th century, with the apotheosis of the first president and the reformer of the Federal Commonwealth, Fatima Assanicus.

?It was common during the Imperial era (pre-Aurean Republic Roman era, editor's note) to honour the passed Emperors as divine, and to continue offering praise and prayer to their genii (guardian spirits). As we pray and honour our family spirits at our home altars and ask for protection and fortune for our homes and families, so can the genus of the state leader be prayed and honoured for the protection of the entire realm. We are simply returning to an ancient and worthy tradition?, explains Titus Remus, a theologian and a priest of the Cultus.

Less than 0,5% of Aureans follow Cultus Romanus. The religion has several schools and traditions, and though there seems to be a widespread consensus among the Collegium, the opinions of the laypersons vary more. ?I agree she was a woman with a good heart and did a lot good for Pax Aurea. But does that make her equal to the heroes of ancient times? This sounds like a political move to me?, ponders Claudia Lupertina, who describes herself as an Elysian mainstreamer of the Cult.

?Now more than ever we're in need of her motherly guidance, and we can fully have faith in that her spirit continues to keep and protect us during these testing times. She's gone, yet she's with us. If anyone deserves to be uplifted to the presence of the Gods, it's her and not some ancient warchief who wraught death and destruction?, says Vestinus Decimus, another Elysian mainstreamer.

More cynical opinions appeared quickly. ?A publicity stunt to get their names on the headlines for one day?, scoffs Reynard Holt, author of the famous Reason and Religion: The Ultimate Dualism. ?It's not that different from a popular celebrity endorsing the most ?in? cult of the day. If anything, it's going to make an ugly stain on Glorius's posthumous reputation. Is this really what we want to remember her from??

    MILITARY COUP DISBANDS BALKAN GOVERNMENT

    General Romulus Declares Himself Emperor

    September IX, 2013 AD
    Article By: Wu Daxia

BREAKING NEWS ? The convention to reform the constitution of the Balkan Socialist Federation was interrupted by a military coup yesterday. Led by General Romulus of the Balkan Army, the convention has been taken hostage by the military. Romulus immediately declared an end to the former republic and the formation of a new ?Romulan Empire? which would be ruled over by himself as emperor.

?There will be the Emperor as head of state. The Praetor as head of government. The Romulan Senate as a Legislative body. Then the Romulan Continuing committee which would be the final say in judicial matter and the body which impeaches senators and chooses the new Praetor?, Romulus stated.

A new constitution, called the Grand Doctrine of the Empire, was also promised. It is to be issued shortly. The states of the republic are to be replaced with Imperial provinces.

The military coup took place in a country already plagued by internal unrest. Violent protests have called a reform of the nation, which was originally the aim of the constitutional convention. Self-immolation was also reported to have been committed by some of the protestors.

At the moment, Vox Populi has no information of potential casualties, nor of the fate of President Yanev.

This is a breaking news story. Vox Populi continues to follow the situation closely and report as new information becomes available.

    PROCTUS CONDEMNS BALKAN COUP

    "Democracy Doesn't Work At Gunpoint"

    September X, 2013 AD
    Article By: Illyrius Varo

President Gaius Proctus has condemned the military coup in the Balkan Socialist Federation in his address to the Commonwealth. Proctus called the move of General Romulus a ?crime against European values?.

?A frustration in the face of slow progress and problems with everyday life is more than understandable, and I believe every one of us can sympathize with the Balkans who struggle with high unemployment and ever-rising costs of the living. A dismantling of the democratic civil administration to achieve an improvemet is not. The events that are taking place in the Balkan Socialist Federation as we speak are a cause of great concern for all of Europe. In a democratic society, we pursue change through a free and open process of voting and representation of the citizens, not via the right of the strongest; through discussion and agreement, not at a gunpoint. Overthrowing a legitime government by force of arms cannot be regarded as anything but a criminal act, and Pax Aurea strongly condemns the coup of General Romulan.?

The president also appealed to the military leaders involved in the coup to refrain from any acts of violence against their own citizens, including their political opponents.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently working closely with the Aurean ambassador to the Balkan Socialist Federation, Mircea Plivius, to determine whether the Aurean citizens present should be evacuated from the country.

    Fulvius Trial Begins After Delays

Former Vice-President Heard At Opening Session

    September XIII, 2013 AD
    Article By: Marius Aventinus

The long-awaited trial of the former Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Fulvius opened yesterday at the Federal Supreme Court in Pacifica. Fulvius was present in person amidst heavy security as the court opened the process of hearing her case. As with the trial of Junia Falco, still ongoing, Case Fulvius is mostly handled with open doors.

The trial was scheduled to begin on September 1st, but was postponed twice due to the defendant's illness. The court found it significant for Fulvius to be present due to the ?extraordinary nature? of the case.

Hundreds of spectarors, journalists, and protestors had gathered outside the courtroom as Fulvius was brought in. Only a fraction of the people present were admitted in, but the session was live-streamed for the audience.

Fulvius was read the charges brought against her. These included gross misuse of power in office and violating the Constitution by authorizing illegal breaches of privacy. When asked how she pleaded, Fulvius answered herself: ?Not guilty.?

The court is expected to give a joint verdict on both Fulvius and Falco cases in October.

Romulan Imperial Party Grabs 5/6 Of Senate Seats

Hasty Election Held Less Than A Week After The Military Coup

    September XV, 2013 AD
    Article By: Caecilia Durio

The military coup of General Romulus has further cemented its position in power in the Balkan Socialist Federation in a special senate election held yesterday. In the election, the pro-coup Romulan Imperial Party (RIP) secured 25 of the 30 seats in the legislative assembly, effectively giving the usurpers legitimate means to accept or decline any changes to future legislation.

Four independent representatives got through. Only one member of the anti-coup Reform Party managed to gain a seat in the senate. The Imperial Electoral Commission approved the results with an unanimous vote. Its members have all been nominated by General Romulus, the leader of the coup and the self-declared Emperor.

The fairness of the election has come into question after the results were publishes. ?When the organizer of a military coup and a pretender to the throne assembles an electoral commission and helds election less than a week after the coup, and then wins five out of six places in the senate, one should ask how fair and true the outcome really is?, ponders Azorius Gelasius, a researcher of foreign politics at the Great Academy of Pacifica. ?This gives Romulus a smokescreen of legitimacy to continue pursuing his agenca in the Balkan States.?

Polls conducted immediately after the coup did give somewhat favourable reception by the people, however. Among a million Balkans questioned, 68% regarded the regime change positively.

Foreign Ministry Evacuates Aureans From Balkan States

Military Coup Is Expected To Result In Violence

    September XVIII, 2013 AD
    Article By: Wu Daxia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun preparations to get Aurean citizens off the Balkan Socialist Federation. Minister Valeria Valerianus met with her staff late yesterday evening. The Aurean ambassador to the BSF, Mircea Plivius, attended to the meeting via internet video feed.

The decision was made after the ministry found the situation ?increasingly worrying and potentially volatile?. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues updates on its travel recommendations, but rarely forbids travel to European destinations. At the moment, the only nation on the ministry's black list is Dromund Kaas. Aureans are also ?strongly advised? not to make their way to Monogolia ? and now to the Balkan Socilist States.

?We are monitoring the development of the post-coup BSF and adjust our policy accordingly. Right now, our priority is to get all our citizens back home, provide this opportunity to everyone who wishes to leave. The ministry can't force anyone to leave this nation, or not travel there, but at the moment, we do not recommend such a course of action?, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Valeria Valerianus.

Valerianus said the Aurean ambassador will continue on her post ?until further notice?. Almost all Aureans residing or travelling in the BSF have been reached. The ministry estimates the majority of the willing will be back in Pax Aurea by the end of the week.

Emperor Romulus Dies, Balkans' Fate Uncertain

High-Ranking Coup Generals Scramble To Fill Power Vacuum

    September XXI, 2013 AD
    Article By: Caecilia Durio

BREAKING NEWS ? General Romulus, who for the past days has been known as the first Emperor of the New Romulan Empire (officially the Balkan Socialist Federation), has passed away. Romulus expired after a series of heart attacks the Balkan media described ?massive?.

Romulus's death follows a period of escalated tensions in the BSF. The general led a successful military coup against the legitimate administration of the republic, taking control on September 8th and quickly consolidating his power by orchestrating a hasty Senate election. He leaves behind a nation roiling in uncertainty and instability.

According to Balkan sources, Romulus had not appointed a heir apparent before his passing. At the moment, there appears to be no active head of state in the nation. No news about the current whereabouts or condition of the displaced President Yanev exist.

Five generals, all members of the Romulan conspiracy to overthrow the legitimate regime, have been named potential successors to the Emperor. Each are described as having backing of the military and members of the senate.

Meanwhile, evacuation of Aurean citizens from the BSF is nearly over. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and sources in the Aurean embassy report that circa 25 Aureans are still unaccounted for, most of them spending their holiday at a remote location in the Balkan countryside.

CIVIL WAR BREAKS OUT IN BALKAN

Peace Talks Led By Commissioner Von Schroeder Fall Apart

Intense Fighting At The Balkan Capital, Casualties Estimated High

    Augustus XXIII, 2013 AD
    Article By: Wu Daxia

BREAKING NEWS ? An all-out civil war has erupted in the Balkan Socialist Federation after the peace mediation by the European Union failed. Intense fighting has engulfed the nation's capital, now renamed Romulus City.

Commissioner of Internal Affairs Blair Von Schroeder met with the four most prominent generals of the Balkan military coup to mediate a lasting solution to the succession crisis, caused by the untimely death of Emperor Romulus. Despite the best efforts of the Commissioner, General Loukanios, a close friend to the deceased emperor, ordered an airstrike against one of his rivals, General Hyginus.

Generals Andronikos, Chrysanthos, and Melanthios have each mobilized troops loyal to their claim to the throne. Hyginus and Adronikos are wrestling over the control of the capital city.

At least 14 000 soldiers and over 1300 civilians have already lost their lives in the battles, say military correspondents. These numbers cannot be confirmed.

All pretenders to the throne have thousands of troops and heavy material at their disposal.

This is a breaking news story. Vox Populi continues to follow the situation closely and report as new information becomes available.
