    Introduction

Golfia, officialy the Apostolic Empire of Golfia, is a sovereign state and constitutional monarchy in northern Europe, divided into three regions and 27 states/cantons. Golfia covers an area of 1,125,000 km2 and has a largely humid continental climate; due to its shape, it is often referred to in Golfia as "the Hammer". With 45 million inhabitants, it is one of the most populous EU member states. Golfia shares open borders with Pacifist cowards, Aalen, Halsberg, Pravoslaviya, Ezriya and Davishire. Highly mountainous in the central part of the country, Golfia is a popular winter sport destination in the local region.

Since classical times, Slavs, Magyars, Celts, Huns, Gepids and Avars have inhabited the south, centre and north of current day Golfia respectively. A tribe known as the Polmagromians formed the Polmagromian Kingdom, which eventually spread throughout Golfia, assimilating and conquering other nearby civilizations and forming the Polmagromian Republic. Polmagrom ultimately emerged as the dominant power, conquering much of the ancient Golfian heartland and becoming the leading cultural, political, and religious centre within its regional sphere. The legacy of the ancient Polmagromian Empire is widespread and can be observed in the national distribution of civilian law, current form of government, Christianity, the Latin script and the Golfian language.

During the Dark Ages, Golfia suffered sociopolitical collapse amid calamitous barbarian invasions, but by the 11th century, numerous rival city-states and regional republics rose to great prosperity through shipping, commerce, and banking, and even laid the groundwork for capitalism. These independent city-states and regional republics often enjoyed a greater degree of democracy in comparison to the monarchies and feudal states found throughout Europe at the time, though much of central and southern Golfia remained under the control of various foreign powers as a result of a succession of conquests of the region.

During the Renaissance, a period of renewed interest in humanism, science, exploration and art, Golfia and the rest of Europe entered the modern era. The Golfian culture flourished at this time, producing famous scholars, artists, and polymaths. Nevertheless, Golfia's importance as a commercial and political power significantly waned with the opening of trade routes from the New World, as New World imports and trade routes became more influential in Europe and bypassed the northern trade routes that the Golfian city-states had dominated. Furthermore, the Golfian city-states constantly engaged one another in bloody warfare, with this tension and violent rivalry culminating in the Golfian Wars of the 15th and 16th centuries, a series of wars and foreign invasions that left the Golfian states vulnerable to annexation by neighboring European powers. Golfia would remain politically fragmented and fall prey to occupation, colonization, conquest and general foreign domination by European Powers subsequently entering a long period of decline.

By the mid-19th century, a rising movement in support of Golfian nationalism and Golfian independence from foreign control lead to a period of revolutionary political upheaval known as the Resurgence, which sought to bring about a rebirth of Golfian cultural and economic prominence by liberating and consolidating the Golfian heartland into an independent and unified nation-state. After various unsuccessful attempts, the Golfian Wars of Independence, the Expedition of the Thousand and the capture of Warsacel resulted in the eventual unification of the country, now a great power after centuries of foreign domination and political division. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the new Apostolic Empire of Golfia rapidly industrialized and enjoyed a prolonged economic boom, thus becoming one of the world's most developed nations. Golfia also succeeded into becoming a colonial empire, which would last from the late 1860s until the mid 1950s.

Golfia is a highly developed country while maintaining primarily a market-based economy. Golfian people enjoy a high standard of living and the country ranks ranks highly in numerous metrics of national performance, notably on key measures of quality of life, health, education, protection of civil liberties, press freedom, economic competitiveness, ease of doing business, job security, government transparency, equality, prosperity and human development. The country benefits from a highly skilled workforce and is among the most educated and productive countries in the world with the one of the highest percentage of its citizens holding a tertiary education degree and whose population enjoys one the highest life expectancies and lowest infant mortality rates of any country. Despite the large presence of Christianity, Golfia has a long history of social tolerance and is generally regarded as a liberal country known for its relaxed gun politics, having legalized abortion, prostitution, euthanasia, same-sex marriage, the production, sale and consumption of cannabis and having decriminalized the usage of all other common drugs.

Goguo is noted for its effective, pragmatic and incorrupt governance and civil service, which together with its rapid development policies, is widely cited as the "Golfian model". Gallup polls shows 84% of its citizens expressed confidence in the national government, and 85% in its judicial systems—one of the highest ratings recorded. Golfia's strong sense of identity and community is founded on a common historical background, shared values such as federalism, monarchism and direct democracy, and Tatradry symbolism. The country is also frequently ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world in cross-national studies of happiness. Golfia maintains a professional, modern military. Despite the country's commitment towards the military, it is used primarily for self-defense and peacekeeping roles, while the nation is regarded one of the safest, most stable and most peaceful countries in the world to live in. With a rich cultural history, Golfia has been continuously home to influential artists, philosophers, musicians, chefs, sportsmen, entrepreneurs, scientists and inventors and features a variety of tourist attractions.
