Winds of War

Captain Belmann was walking to the office of the Chancellor to give him a small brief on General Villar's response to his order of sending a task force to Spain in response to the indiscriminate attack of a german Destroyer by several Spanish Air Force aircraft.[reference]

Kanzler, Joaquin Villar has delivered an ultimatum. He wants you to withdraw our forces from Barcelona.

That damn dictator is never going to give it up. It doesn't matter. We're just going to ignore him. That means that tomorrow Operation Glowing Iron will be initiated. Captain, go to the communications room and send a telegram to both the Italian and Soviet embassies informing them of our impending military action in Spain.

    Sir, yes sir!

Captain Belman abandoned the room and went to the communications room from where he sent the telegram to the embassies.

  • "This is urgent, don't you understand? Listen, I don't have time to talk to any secretaries, I need to speak to the Presidenta at once! Patch me through to her!" The Italian ambassador to the Reich was enjoying his new job. However, only having the position as of a few months ago, his name didn't carry much weight.

    "I've told you Signore...eh..."

"Signore Leone Italius Cimo, ambassador of the Kingdom to the Gro?deutsches Reich."

"Signore Cimo, as I said, the Presidenta is on her way to Sicilia for a short holiday and I was given explicit orders, by the Queen's Chief of Staff, not to give anyone her private number."

"Are you crazy? Fine! Patch me through to the Palace Chief of Staff then, for Christ's sake."

_Signore Cimo knew this was going to all blow up in his face. He had had a meeting with the Presidenta herself and it was explained to him that the Queen kept trying to butt her way into foreign politics. The Presidenta still (correctly) suspected the Queen of having a hand in causing the latest Italian Civil War. However, this message couldn't wait and orders were blocking him from directly contacting the Commander in Chief herself.

After a few rings, Palace Chief of Staff Bettina Magro answered._

"Buon giorno Signore Cimo, how may I help you?"

"The Embassy here has just received a message of possible German military action against Spain. I must speak to the Presidenta, but you gave an order to make her unreachable. You can tell how urgent it is that I speak to her."

"By order of the Queen, I cannot do that. I have, however, just added the Queen's line to our conversation."

The Queen demanded that Cimo relay all information to her and forget about trying to get in touch with the Presidenta today. After a few seconds, Cimo had explained all he knew."

"Signore Cimo, you are to organize a conference call between the Chancellery and the Palace. We intend to hold true to our new treaty and agreement, no matter what the Germans request."

  • The hemicycle of the Congress of Deputies was crowded by Military officers and people wearing army-like uniforms. General Villar appeared from a lateral door and went up to speak to the people gathered there

Deputies, men of the Spanish nation! Today, the Germans have once more decided to ignore our will as a sovereign people to decide on our future. German ships lie on our harbours and the time has come for us to take charge of our future. The Sword of Damocles will fall. They see us as a threat to their hegemony in southern Europe and they think they can just sweep us out of the map. They have ignored our ultimatum and they will be the ones who will pay the consequences. They shall be destroyed along with their Soviet and Italian allies. We will make them know of their mistake, and the wrath of the Spanish nation will fall over the German military and its allies. There will be no mercy! We shall never surrender. We will fight them on the ground. We will fight them on the sea. We will fight them in Gibraltar. We will fight them in Lisbon. We will fight them anywhere anytime. Wherever they go we'll be there. There shall be no forgiveness. There shall be no mercy. We have been enlightened by god. We will show them the might of the Spanish race!

The room became a sea of cheers and ovations to the Spanish Caudillo

  • Signora Pallotti choked on her sip of coffee.

"Whoa, whoa! Slow down and say that again!"

"Signora Presidenta, Spain has declared war on the Reich, the Soviet Union and the Republic."

"Well? Where the hell is my transport back to Roma? I need to be home immediately!" She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Then, it hit her. "I am not home... and I bet that bitch is going to keep me stuck here," she thought to herself and sank down into a chair.

    INSIDE THE ITALIAN PALACE

"If a single word gets out that I am keeping the Presidenta stranded on Sicilia for the time being, it'll be your ass! Not even she can know it's at my command. Come up with a good excuse! You are to get me Stato Maggiore dell?Esercito Luigi Messe on the line as soon as possible!" _The Queen shouted into the phone and slammed it down to end the conversation with Palace Chief of Staff Bettina Magro.

A moment later, her phone rang._

    "Your Majesty?"

"General Messe, listen very carefully. The Presidenta is, at the moment, outside of Roma and therefore unable to perform her necessary duties. The country is at war. You are to follow my every command. For now, I am the Commander in Chief of the Italian Armed Forces. My first orders: activate every military base in Italia, shut down and guard the boarders... and place a small blockade on the island of Sicilia... let nothing in, nor out... and don't be seen there."

    ~National Academy, 199th meeting.

Dean of Commerce Pisku Triesko: "This would be a great opportunity. To sell arms to the warring nations."

Provost Trochio Ilche: "You want Spain to declare war on us too. We have little in the form of army, navy, or air. This would be our last mistake, in our already crumbling government! The emperor has already agreed to dissolve the National Academy and the Lower House.

Dean of Social Relations Asilla Tronio: "Perhaps a last chance may be from the economic boom that we get from this move!

Dean of Physical Sciences Nar Haido: "The elections are ten days away. This won't happen."

Comrade Jin Toshua: "The war will be over in ten days, given the military might of the Reich, and the Soviet Union, as well as Italia.

Provost Trochio Ilche: "I will not have any of this. Academy session dismissed."

    Yes I did, Sir.

Captain, listen very carefully. I want you to call the Armed Forces Command and order them to implement contingency plan Codename Operation Glowing Iron.

The Plan you told me of yesterday?

Yes. Tell them it is of vital importance that the plan gets implemented. It will be essential to the defense of the motherland and the military offensive on Spain.

    It will be done. Sir!
