The wet sides of these mountains have forests and grasslands, while a vast desert lies in the rain shadow of the Azrekkian Mountains. The steep Varian Mountains along the Red Sea give way to densely developed flatlands along the Suez. The east is an emerging coastline with cliffs. Numerous smaller rivers feed into the Grand River, one of the longest in Europe.
