Helhuan's Letter to the Ruthenish People
-
To the People of Ruthund,
My service as the European Councilor for Ruthund has been one of the most rewarding experiences as a public servant while being one of the most challenging times as well. As I grow older and enter into the last decades of my life, I can say much has changed in Ruthund since I was young. I still remember the time when most Ruthens knew little about Europe or any country outside of Ruthund for that matter. A time when many of our major coastal cities were treated like foreign countries complete with walls around them. Since those times, Ruthund has come a long way and I see a bright future for this country on the horizon.
Though I knew the path towards this brighter Ruthund would be obstructed both by people at home and abroad, little did I know how rooted resistance was to change when I became an EU Councilor. While Europe enters a tumultuous time rife with unrest, uprisings, and civil conflict, our government has interpreted these turn of events as a vindication of our dark past, clinging onto old relics of a different time. Among these relics of which I speak is the government’s constant efforts to keep Ruthund self-interested and out of European Affairs as much as possible. This is despite Modern Ruthenish history comprising exactly a demonstration of a critical failure. The failure of isolationism and the revanchism that the past Monarchy so quickly resorted to as a means to maintain their power and saving our country from foreign interference. Yet these current administrations still believe that some of these policies still work. I believe otherwise.
The Neutrality Motion that I was instructed to present highlighted a fundamental problem in our government. That at the core of our democracy stands the Factions of Old that have been hell-bent on preserving as much of the Financial Cliques, the Old Class system, and the Monarchy that was permissible. I had once believed that Gundyno was the faction that had moved on and started to see the reality that Ruthund needed to move past its history. Our current Lord of State gave me that hope. But I was wrong.
To put it frankly, I do not believe that Ruthund should be a Neutral Nation. Though it is not because of Mr. Firoux’s arguments (which by the way, I too personally find offensive to both Europe and Ruthund), but because I know the government is merely pushing for Neutrality so they have some legitimacy in doing nothing while Europe burns. This, to me, is not good foreign policy and I cannot in good conscience continue to serve a government that finds this moral. As a result, I will be resigning as European Councilor effective the 19 October, 2020. I have already notified the Riksroja of my intentions. I wish luck upon luck on my future replacement and I thank you for giving me the opportunity of being your voice.
Sincerely,
Helhuan Ziharuthstukur
EU Councilor, Ruthund
