The European Grean Deal, from A to Z
The European Green Deal is our deal for a sustainable, healthier and more resilient Europe. A plan to bring nature back into our lives, for the benefit of us all and the future generations that will live in our region. Find out our main purposes:
- Animals: We want to halt and reverse the decline of pollinators. Nature restoration and wildlife protection will also be key to a greener and better Europe.
- Biosphere: With the European Union Green Deal, we want to protect our biodiversity and ecosystems by restoring at least 25,000 km of EU rivers to a free-flowing state and planting 3 billion trees.
- Change: We need change – a transformational change. With the Green Deal, we aim to transform our economy and society for a sustainable, climate-neutral future by 2050, while at the same time leaving no one behind.
- Deforestation: It is destroying our biodiversity and natural environment. With the Green Deal and its EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, we will restore our forests by planting 3 billion trees, and establishing protected areas for at least 30% of land in Europe.
- Energy: We want to decarbonise the EU’s energy system by boosting Europe’s offshore wind energy and the production of clean hydrogen.
- Farmers: They put food on our tables and we will help them to make the EU food system more sustainable. With the EU Green Deal and its EU Farm2Fork Strategy, we want to boost organic farming and reduce the use and risk of chemical and hazardous pesticides by 50%.
- Green: We want to make Europe greener, healthier and more sustainable. Green will also be our recovery from the many conflicts our region has suffered last year – for a more resilient and healthier society.
- Housing: We will make buildings more energy-efficient to create safer and healthier living spaces, lower energy bills and reduce emissions. Boosting their energy performance will improve our lives and relieve the pressure on the environment.
- Industry: It is the source of all the goods we use. It will become greener and less polluting. Our industries will be able to use fewer resources and to create less waste such as plastics, which often ends up in the world's seas and oceans.
- Just Transition: We want a green transformation that is fair and works for everyone. Implementing the European Green Deal will be more challenging for some regions, and some sectors. The Just Transition Mechanism will provide financial and practical support to those most in need.
- 0 Km: It applies to all food products that are produced, sold, and eaten locally – with minimum impact on the environment. We aim at making our food system safer and more sustainable - for a healthier society and environment, by 2030!
- Land: The Green Deal will take care of our land – 30% of it will become protected areas, while we will increase organic farming and biodiversity-reach landscape features on agricultural land by 10%.
- Mobility: It accounts for ¼ of EU’s greenhouse emissions. We want to reduce polluting transport emissions further and faster: 90% reduction by 2050 is our goal. To achieve this, we will promote a cleaner and more sustainable mobility for all, with rail being one of our best allies.
- Nature: When it is healthy, it protects and provides. We must look after it, because our planet and economy depend on it. We want to protect our natural environment, by restoring biodiversity and conserving endangered ecosystems.
- Oceans: They are home to the majority of all life on Earth, produce oxygen and help keep the climate in balance. W will establish protected areas for at least 30% of EU’s seas by 2030, conserve marine ecosystems and restore their biodiversity. The European Council has already legislated on this, and more progress should be made towards accomplishing with this goals.
- Pact: The European Climate Pact will give everyone a voice, and space to design new climate actions, to build a better future for all - because everyone has its part to play, incluiding citizens all around Europe.
- Quality of Life: Our aim is to improve it, for you and for the future generations that will benefit from a cleaner and healthier environment. Improving the quality of our lives, while also restoring and protecting the environment is what the European Green Deal is about.
- Recovery: It will be green, just and digital. It will help Europe get back on its feet and secure a more stable future for all. The Green Deal is at the core of our recovery from the conflicts we have suffered, helping us build a healthier, stronger and more resilient Europe.
- Sustainability: It is about using our resources carefully and being thoughtful about leaving a better world for those to come. The EU budget will provide investment to develop and deploy new, clean technologies.
- Targets: They are green ambitions for a healthier and climate-neutral future. We want to become climate-neutral by 2050, cut pollution and ensure a just and inclusive transition for all.
- Upcycling: It is the activity of using our creativity to give old, unused items a second life instead of throwing them away. The European Green Deal will boost the transition to a circular economy while helping companies design products that are easier to reuse, repair & recycle.
- Vision: It is our call to improve people's well-being, protect our natural habitats for the people, the planet and the economy. We have the vision of becoming climate-neutral by 2050 to protect human life, animals and plants by cutting pollution.
- Waste: With the Circular Economy Action Plan, we want to target the entire life cycle of products to modernise our economy while also protecting the environment. We must stop the waste ending up in our seas and oceans, to avoid a major wildlife crisis. It's time to take action as soon as possible.
- (E)xtintion: The global population of wild species has fallen by 60% over the last 40 years. With the new EU-wide Biodiversity Strategy, we want to put Europe’s biodiversity on the path to recovery by 2030.
- Youth: To ensure the next generation of Europeans is ready for a green future, we will take measures to support them with jobs, trainings and apprenticeships.
- Zero Pollution: We strive for a toxic-free environment. With the #EUGreenDeal, we want to achieve it by restoring & preserving biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems, addressing pollution from urban runoff, micro plastics and chemicals and helping achieve clean air.
Would you like to know more about the green transition we are bringing to Europe? It's your lucky day, because myself, Jean-Claude Juncker, confirm we are bringing another update soon! Stay tuned for more.

Introducing Energy Labels: A new way to be 'Energetically Efficient'
Reaching the 'Energy Efficiency' target is one of the main objectives of the Green Deal. The EU energy label pretends to be – together with minimum “ecodesign” requirements - a success story that will be key in boosting the energy efficiency of everyday electric appliances like lighting, heating, fridges, freezers and televisions, but also products like fuel boilers, tyres, motors, transformers, converters, fans, vacuums, heaters and air conditioners. Putting energy efficiency first is a key objective of the EU, as energy savings are the easiest way of saving money for customers and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions along with the Green Deal requirements. The EU has set binding targets of reducing our energy consumption through improvements in energy efficiency by 2030 by at least 32.5%, relative to a ‘business as usual’ scenario.
The labels will go from A (the best energy efficient product) to G (the worst energy efficient product). These are the new projected labels:
- Dishwashers.
- Washing machines and washer driers.
- Refrigerators and wine storage fridges.
- Lamps.
- Electronic displays.
- Comercial Fridges: Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.
Tyre energy labels will provide a clear and common classification of tyres performance for rolling resistance, braking on wet surfaces and external noise. The labels will help consumers make informed decisions when they are buying tyres as they will easily set their priority choice based on the 3 parameters. At the same time, the labels will drive manufacturers to innovate to make their tyres appear in the top classes by being more fuel efficient, safer and quieter. In addition to the standard label, there will be also options for including (next to the noise icon) an icon relating to grip in icy conditions and/or severe snow conditions. This gives consumers 4 label options in total. Tyres suitable for severe snow conditions bear the “3 peaks and snow” or “alpine” symbol that is also present on the sidewall of such tyres. Nordic winter tyres for use on iced surfaces will feature a new symbol that represents an ice stalagmite. Standardised tests are used to assess the performance of tyres in all the 5 parameters indicated in the label. National authorities may check the veracity of the performance levels claimed. The QR code, read with a smartphone or other suitable reader, is intended to provide additional information from a European Commission database.
New Tyres' Energy Labels
The European Green Deal pretends to be the lifeboat Europe needs to stop the Climate Change, making our region responsible towards one of the main problems in our lifes. Together, united as one region like in many other times, will be able to push this forward and have the continent we all deserve.
