Dairghaxx Debate for the Solarity of Azrekko Special Election
OOC: To help understand some things:
"Solarity" = What residents of Azrekko call their Dominion
"Dairghaxx" = Governor of a Dominion
"Sanmezlir" = What residents of the City of Azrekko would call their Dairghaxx if they were their own Dominion
"Maelir" = Mayer of a city
"Stormhold" = What residents of Chirez call their DominionWelcome to the DBC Special Election live debate! I am your host, Jackie Valdemar, and tonight we have the two candidates for Dairghaxx of Azrekko. On my left is Tychroneus Dey of the Sun and on my right is Jade Tolland of the Sand. Both candidates won the right to be here by drawing more than 25% of the votes in the primary.
The format of this debate will be the standard question and answer. Whichever candidate is not picked first to answer a question may answer it as a rebuttal to the other's position and additional rebuttal time may be provided where needed. As this is Azrekko, you know the drill about keeping responses to reasonable times and to keep them civil. So, on to opening statements, we will start with Jade.
Jade Tolland: Thank you, Jackie. I am Jade Tolland and I am running for Dairghaxx on a platform of unity - we are stronger together, as one dominion, and together we can solve the big problems that have brought our economy to a halt. My proposals support our existing industries and explore new opportunities, without leaving anyone behind. As Dairghaxx, I would take bold action on big infrastructure projects that we desperately need to kickstart our economy, including the Eastway, both pipelines, a second transit depot, and the flood control system. Together with my partner Anita Lenn for Maelir of Azrekko, we would bring relief to our largest city through tax breaks, welfare reform, and job creation building new infrastructure and clean energy projects. A vote for our ticket is a vote for big and realistic change, achieved together, united for a brighter future. Thank you.
Jackie Valdemar: And now, Ty, you can give your opening statement.
Tychroneus Dey: Thanks, Jackie. I am Tychroneus Dey and I am running for Dairghaxx because enough is enough - the situation is intolerable and we must act immediately. I believe the Dominion level government is completely dysfunctional and local governments need to be empowered to act in the best interests of their communities. This is why I would dissolve the Solarity and offer autonomy - no longer would the City have to subsidize flood control in the Valley, no longer would the outer Desert be subject to strict regulations intended for the City, and so on. Once empowered to make their own decisions, our 3 Dominions could then begin to heal. I support leaving infrastructure projects up to their respective Dominions - the Desert is never going to see a single Kael of benefit from the flood control system, nor will the Valley benefit from the Eastway. My ticket partner is Alan Davey for Maelir of Azrekko. His plans for the City completely blow me away by their innovativeness and would ignite the largest economic boom in generations. However, none of that will happen under the ridiculous regulatory structure of the Solarity as it is. If you are serious about getting out of this depression, we have this one chance to really do it, like really actually do it. A vote for us is a vote for incredible things and the power to get them done, thank you.
Jackie Valdemar: My first question is for Ty - When you started your campaign, you expressed desire to abolish the position of Dairghaxx and the Solarity altogether, now you mention 3 Dominions. Can you clarify your plan for this?
Tychroneus Dey: I have indeed adjusted my original position based on feedback from local officials about its feasibility. I now believe in splitting the Solarity into 3 independent dominions - the Valley of Azrekko, the City of Azrekko, and the Desert of Azrekko. Each of these three regions has distinct and often contradictory needs that can't be reconciled within the same government anymore. Notably, the Maelir of the City would now be a Sanmezlir instead, empowered to carry out policy without crippling red tape and other interference from the Solarity.
Jackie Valdemar: I see. And I understand, you, Jade, have also updated your position on the Dominion a bit?
Jade Tolland: I have. I believe strongly in staying united as one and keeping the Solarity, but I also realize that local governments need more control. I would create a new tri-board representing the 3 main regions and spend more time on Direct Connect making sure our people are informed about how the Solarity's government operates. My opponent is spreading misinformation about the Dominion level government - it isn't some evil bureaucracy intentionally stopping the City or anywhere else from implementing policies they need.
Tychroneus Dey: I beg to differ! The Assembly is, to take a term from western society, "gerrymandered", and completely paralyzed due to extreme disagreement between representatives from our 3 regions. The body cannot achieve a majority on any legislation or even garner more than 38%. And just saying we should all be united and work together doesn't change the reality that we aren't and can't. We need to face the reality that our Dominion is comprised of far-flung places that don't have a cohesive history and were just lumped into it because they don't belong in any other Dominions. And then our previous Dairghaxx absolutely was using the power of the office to kill policy in the City due to interpersonal conflict and personal economic gain.
Jade Tolland: I admit that consensus in the Assembly is difficult at times, but that isn't a reason for a region to just take its proverbial ball and go home because they didn't get their way. And now you are parroting unproven conspiracy theories about Dairghaxx - Maelir relations in the City that simply aren't true. No one keeps their own major city in a serious state of economic depression just to stick it to a political rival.
Jackie Valdemar: This exchange is fascinating, but we must move on to the next question, starting with Jade - You want to build several major infrastructure projects and lower taxes, how do you plan on funding this?
Jade Tolland: Honestly, we have to deficit-spend to get the ball rolling. I don't try to hide that, when your back is up against the wall, it's time for the government to intervene. The City government doesn't have the depth of resources that the Solarity has, the Solarity can step in and kickstart the economy. Just think of how many jobs would be created through all those projects and the economic activity they could generate in the future. Ideally, I would lobby the federal government to help kick in some funding, but we can't count on that avenue. The Solarity has to step up and take care of its own.
Tychroneus Dey: Actually, the City does have the resources to handle this, they are just mismanaged. 11 million people live in Azrekko and it generates 81% of the entire Solarity's GDP. Let's not kid ourselves here, if the tax revenue generated by Azrekko stayed in Azrekko, it could easily bail itself out of this mess. If the Solarity allowed Azrekko to engage in new industries like solar and wind farms, crypto mining, gambling, blockchain finance, etc, it could easily bail itself out of this mess. The City doesn't need the Solarity to intervene, it needs to keep its revenue and not have anyone else telling it what it can't do.
Jade Tolland: Again, that's misinformation - nobody in the Solarity government is actively preventing the City from pursuing new industries, although I concede that Solarity level regulations could use updating to reflect modern times. That said, I strongly oppose turning it into a gambling hub, there is already a drug crisis in the City, while crypto attracts scams and criminals galore. Are we trying to turn Azrekko into some sort of vice city?
Tychroneus Dey: Solarity level regulations are crippling...read them! The Solarity actively passes laws, when it is even able to pass anything, that pre-empt local initiatives it disagrees with. Gambling is a terrific example of something it finds morally wrong and bans the City from having. You mention increasing tourism in your platform and casinos are a great tourist attraction. Nowhere in the country has a particularly notable concentration of casinos, we could be the first! Gambling also goes hand-in-hand with crypto, crypto is a wealth generation engine and freshly minted millionaires would love somewhere to spend that wealth. There's nothing wrong with it...those with a gambling addiction should seek help. The rest of us are grown adults and can make our own choices. Crypto is also the hottest and fastest growing industry in the country - and Azrekko is uniquely positioned to be a full spectrum global crypto center. Also, there are more criminals transacting in Kaels than the market capitalization of the entire crypto market combined, crime is laughable.
Jackie Valdemar: We must move on again, now a question for Ty - You oppose the Eastway, the flood control system, and both pipelines. Why?
Tychroneus Dey: The Eastway is too expensive for too little potential benefit. Unlike the Skyway, which is already built and paid for and which connects local communities, the Eastway would have zero exits between the City and the Canal or somewhere in the Stormhold of Chirez. The land it would have to cover is vast and wild, longer than some entire countries. The main beneficiary would be the oil industry, which is on the wrong side of history, which is why I also oppose the pipelines. We don't need to be drilling more oil, we need to be putting up solar and wind farms in our desert, that's the future. For flood control, it harms the floodplain, which is intended by nature to flood. Floods deposit fertile soil and are why we are able to farm the Valley so productively. If people don't want their residences to flood, put them on stilts.
Jade Tolland: I agree that we need more solar and wind, but oil is one of our main industries and we need to support what we've got, not just drop them hot potato, leaving industry workers with nothing. An oil man can't just turn around and start putting up wind turbines, that takes a whole re-education and retraining infrastructure that we don't have. The Solarity level government has the resources to get the Eastway done and it would open up tourism from the Stormhold, not just oil exports. The flood control system is very necessary to prevent entire towns from devastating flooding. Those floods don't just hit fields, they hit everything with how low lying the Valley is. Raising the quantity of buildings that exist in Valley towns would be very expensive and impractical.
Tychroneus Dey: Oil workers wouldn't be left with nothing, my running partner Alan Davey wants to build new universities to teach people the wind and solar trades as part of making the City a global clean energy hub. Also, tourists won't come down the Eastway, a very long trip, when they can already just fly into our airport much faster!
Jade Tolland: .
Jackie Valdemar: My final question is for Jade - Your position on the European Union is to leave it, but your running mate wants to remain. How would you reconcile those differences?
Jade Tolland: It honestly doesn't matter if the Solarity or City leave or remain - such entities can't leave the European Union in the first place. Those positions are entirely symbolic and we can discuss it further at a later date.
Tychroneus Dey: It actually does matter, seeing as something like 97% of the City wants to leave. That kind of total consensus tells you there is deep hurt in the community and the right thing to do is leave, or at least let the people vote on it. While we can't legally leave, we can engage in civil disobedience and refuse to follow the damaging EU laws that put our economy in this devastating position.
Jade Tolland: That just sounds irresponsible, since the federal government would just force us to comply or the EU would fine us. The last thing we need is to spending money on legal action.
Jackie Valdemar: Seeing no further discussion, it's now time for closing statements. Jade opened, so Ty, you get to close first.
Tychroneus Dey: Thanks. So, viewers have heard our arguments and can see very different visions for the future. I want us to have real local control so we can solve our own problems in the ways we know best. The Valley, as its own independent Dominion, would no longer worry about argicultural-urban legal friction. The Desert, as its own independent Dominion, would keep its frontier ethos intact. The City, as its own independent Dominion, would be fully empowered to chart a new course towards serious economic prosperity. It takes big guts to admit that our system is broken and that we need to split up a Dominion, but it's the unfortunate reality we find ourselves in. No amount of flowery, feel good rhetoric will change this, only action. Previous approaches have failed, we need to try something new and daring. Vote Tychroneus Dey for Dairghaxx and Alan Davey for Maelir!
Jade Tolland: There are huge differences between us and they are on full display tonight. I sincerely hope viewers don't actually want to break up the Solarity into 3 pieces, that would be like giving up and burning down the house. Why can't we come together, work together, and figure out solutions for everyone? We need careful, structured reform that doesn't leave any place out or anyone behind. As Dairghaxx, I will not leave you behind! Vote Jade Tolland and Anita Lenn for sane and practical solutions rather than reckless ones. We will create jobs and build the infrastructure our Solarity desperately needs. We will get out of this depression, together, one Diminion working together for the benefit for all. Thank you and good night!

I started out the day with a lousy parking ticket - ended up hanging out with Alan Davey!

What's up Youtube? I'm Rachel Destina, I travel the country in search of Duxburian celebrities to find out their real life stories. I've covered hundreds of fascinating people in my time as a Daily Dune vlogger, but today an incredible story came to me completely by accident!
But, before we get into that, I want to tell you about my sponsor, Liberty Mutual. I switched to them recently and it's been a great experience. Did you know that Liberty Mutual customizes your car insurance, so you only pay for what you need? I saved a ton of money and am very happy! Liberty, Liberty, Liberty....LIBERTY!
So, I'm back in my home city of Azrekko and came to the Oasis Riverside Mall on the surface this morning to go shopping, but parked on the street cause I was only buying a few things real quick and didn't bother paying for such a short visit. I thought it was fine, and like I don't even know how to use the parking app on my phone, but this mean kop comes up and writes me a K:125 ticket while I'm in the store. How rude? Had a bad experience with the Oasis parking alliance, too? Share your thoughts in the comments section! Also hit the like and subscribe buttons so I can afford to keep bitching!
The kop did give me a free hour before moving on, but like, I already bought my clothes and was going to leave, I don't need an hour.
So, I ended up staying and walking around outside to cope and seethe...and THAT'S WHEN IT HAPPENED...
Fucking Alan Davey randomly walks by in regular street clothes by himself on his phone. I'm like WTF?
Speaking of phones, my sponsor Apple gave me a brand new iPhone Extreme Pro 14 to check out. This is the most potent iPhone ever made with the new X14 Super Bionic chip and 16 gb of ram - it's faster than many laptops and even desktops. Games are buttery smooth at 4K and high refresh rates, productivity apps load instantly, and the quad cameras are amazing. It comes out of the box with your favorite cryptocurrency wallets, Apple Exchange, and Ripple-X. This powerhouse of a phone launches on the 300th for K:1499. Like what you see? Let me know in the comments!
So as you obviously know, Alan Davey is running for Maelir of Azrekko and has become an internet sensation with his unusual platform of transforming the City into a global crypto hub. I've met a lot of politicians in my career, but never someone like this, this guy is talking about a true next level meta. The first time I heard what he was talking about, it just completely blew my mind, like I can't even...and nobody really knows who he is, he just emerged from outta nowhere. Maybe, he's a time traveler from the future?
With how crucial this election is for my own home city, interviewing Alan has been a must, but he's so busy with campaigning, I haven't been able to find him. Of course, when I am not trying to track him down, HE ENDS UP RANDOMLY STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME LIKE OMG...he's pretty hot too, that makes everything even better...
So, I walk super casually up and ask him if he's Alan Davey, he says yes, but in that kind of uncertain tone like he's worried about what happens next lol, but I am super up front with him about who I am and the site I work for. If anything, he's now more worried...
Shows Alan's reaction "The Daily Dune? Isn't that a tabloid celebrity gossip site?"
I fess up to us not exactly being the Daily Dominion, but show him some of my past work that demonstrates how the subjects have been portrayed well. I am absolutely dying to know what this guy is really like, so after some convincing he agrees to tell me a bit about his life, we sit down at a bench next to the river, and here's what went down:
Shows taped video
Rachel Destina: So, watcha doin' out here at Oasis?
Alan Davey: I have the day off from campaigning to just relax and recover, so I am actually here to play Pokemon Go. "Gotta catch 'em all" doesn't only apply to voters!
Rachel Destina: Lol, I used to play that in Y916, only made it to level 27 tho...I see you are level 50, you must go hard!
Alan Davey: Campaigning takes me all over the City, which is terrific for my pokedex! But, there's actually another reason I come to play at Oasis. Many of the stops here are memorial plaques and if you actually read them, you realize that this mall complex sits on land that was illegally taken from its original owners. Can't use eminent domain to take property for a private purpose, but the poor are easily exploited in this city. So, I also come to raise awareness in the hopes that one day, the mall can be bought out and relocated.
Cuts tape for reaction Well, thanks Alan, making me feel like shit for buying clothes here...now I want to return them...not even joking...
Rachel Destina: You were poor once, right? ...I mean, you don't have to answer that if it makes you uncomfortable, I kinda didn't phrase that well...
Alan Davey: Very poor. We are not far from the slum I was born in, East Azrekko. My fam came from nothing, we had nothing. My mother left the country to try and find employment and my father split town when I was very young. I remember dumpster diving for food and redeeming bottles to bring some money to the shelter.
Rachel Destina: I'm so sorry, that sounds awful.
Alan Davey: It could have been worse. East Azrekko is part of the Oasis school district, so I got to have a good quality education. That was key to getting out of poverty.
Rachel Destina: Now you're a crypto millionaire! What got you into crypto and how did you ride it to the moon?
Alan Davey: Pure desperation, Rachel. Even if the city economy weren't in shambles, companies still wouldn't be hiring job candidates with a shelter address in East Azrekko - the amount of discrimination in the job market against poor Sunmasters is unreal. I had thousands of applications ignored or rejected outright, for entry level positions. Rejection by traditional society got me into crypto. I learned about Bitcoin and the alternative world it offered, then saved up bottle money and bought coins. I was able to get a bunch of BTC since it only cost K:0.005 a coin, and the rest is uhh...history lol.
Rachel Destina: Literally rags to riches!
Alan Davey: Yep. Crypto is amazing in many respects, not just as a get rich quick scheme, tho. It offered me what the legacy financial system would not - banking, savings, access to credit, all without prejudice. It offered me a sense of belonging to a community. I learned to program and contributed code to the Bitcoin Blockchain, then helped create the Lightning Network.
Rachel Destina: That's so cool! I love the Lightning Network, it lets me have and send small amounts of Bitcoin for barely any fee!
Alan Davey: I'm really glad you like it! The Lightning Network was a way of paying my skills forward, helping people gather BTC even if they can only afford a tiny amount at a time.
Rachel Destina: You were working on Bitcoin really early on...do you know who Satoshi Nakamoto really is?
Alan Davey: Nobody does! My best guess would be the same guy I strongly suspect created the internet and modern cryptography...but I have zero proof, so...we may never know.
Rachel Destina: Ooooooooooooohhhhhhh
Alan Davey: ...Yeah, you know who I'm talking about.
Rachel Destina: So like, you really think crypto is the answer to fixing the city? And can actually work?
Alan Davey: Absolutely, in conjunction with related endeavours. For example, take mining - what do miners need? Tons and tons of space and electricity. What does Azrekko have? A giant desert full of sun and wind. We could be the crypto mining capital of the entire world AND have it powered by 100% renewable energy! With that mining ecosystem comes developers, speculators, start-ups, exchanges, banks, blockchain gaming companies, the whole 9 marks. It's a huge surge of economic activity and can even drive tourism. Imagine people visiting the physical crypto stock market, trying their luck in decentralized casinos, literally sending Doge to the moon at the Azrekko Spaceport, taking part in esports tournaments in blockchain games, etc. Even just the effects of having so many cutting edge creative and technical types in the City, collaborating and innovating. We have nothing like this now.
Rachel Destina: Lol decentralized casinos...but yeah I totally follow, that all sounds really inspirational! Lol so when you're not gambling away your newfound wealth in decentralized casinos...what else do you enjoy doing with your free time? Do you have other hobbies?
Alan Davey: I've been doing some running lately. Not good enough to enter any races, but I'm improving week by week. I also started a floorball league at my old homeless shelter, it's a great way for people to blow off stress in a fun, competitive environment. You're welcome to come tonight. There will also be a cookout for dinner.
Rachel Destina: I'd love to, but...do you slam the ball really hard at girls?
Alan Davey: Rachel, the Duxburian Union is an egalitarian society...you can expect zero mercy from me.
Rachel Destina: ...lol, ooooooh nooooooo jk I still want to play! Oh, and I have some internet culture questions for you, you are not allowed to skip!
Alan Davey: Lol ok, fire away...
Rachel Destina: Is the dress white and gold or blue and black?
Alan Davey: ... ... It looks white and gold in the picture, but is really blue and black.
Rachel Destina: Based. Is a hoodie with a zipper a sweatshirt or a jacket?
Alan Davey: Jacket.
Rachel Destina: Pineapple on pizza?
Alan Davey: Ewww...no...
Rachel Destina: PewDiePie or T-Series?
Alan Davey: Who?
Rachel Destina: lol! On a more serious note, what is your favorite TV show? Favorite movie?
Alan Davey: I didn't have a TV until very recently, so I am binge-watching a bunch of stuff for the first time ever. My favorite movie is Dream Runner, it's kind of obscure. The main character dreams as another person every time he goes to sleep. One day, he finds that he is unable to wake up and becomes stuck in the dream world as the other guy and must figure out how to escape that reality.
Rachel Destina: Sounds intense, I'll have to check it out! Last question! What is your deepest, darkest fear?
Alan Davey: Drowning in a super massive flash flood as the North Gate suddenly collapses and destroys the City. Its structural condition looks so questionable that I've sent like a dozen emails about it, but never hear anything back (kinda like applying for jobs, haha). I keep having dreams about catastrophic failure, it's terrifying.
Rachel Destina: That would be terrifying...I'm sure engineers monitor the gate around the clock tho.
Alan Davey: I'd sure hope so!
Rachel Destina: Thanks for sharing and thanks for spending time with me!
Alan Davey: No problem! Also, I was serious about the game and cookout, you are 100% legit welcome to come.
Rachel Destina: Cya there!
Cuts back to live
SO........ok wow. Alan gave me a whole new perspective on being poor on the surface. I've never even been to East Azrekko even tho it starts only 3 blocks from the mall. Since most of us live comfortable middle class lives under the surface, poverty is a problem that is kinda out of sight and out of mind, we really could be better about addressing it. I've also never been to a homeless shelter before, it's a whole world I know next to nothing about. Def feels shameful that our next Maelir could be someone who used to dumpster dive for food. Alan was such a cool guy and would be the same exact person without the crypto wealth, I feel terrible that society used to reject him just for being poor.
What do you think? Let me know in the comments. That's it for today, see you next time!

BREAKING: Viggo Treyson Drops Out of Maelir Race, Citing Low Polling Numbers, Endorses Anita Lenn
Viggo Treyson has officially called it quits after consistently trailing Anita Lenn and Alan Davey by significant margins in several major polls. His campaign has formally endorsed Lenn for Maelir and will be working with her to consolidate their policy platforms. This development is a blow to Davey, who is now expected to trail Lenn when the next set of polls are released. Davey and Lenn were locked in a statistical tie as of the latest polls. They will go head-to-head in a hotly anticipated debate before election day.
