Violet Leandros to step down from Prime Minister Office

In an unforeseen turn of events, Prime Minister Violet Leandros has announced this morning her intention to relinquish her duties as head of state and government, as well her post as Member of the Senate for Dikaíoma (Dytikós).

Leader of the Derectan Democratic Confluence since late 2014, she became Prime Minister after the 2017 General Elections, in which the Derectan Popular Alliance, at the time led by former Prime Minister Carolina de la Torre-Ferrándiz, lost the super-majority it had enjoyed in Congress during the XLVth legislature.
The importance of the Upper House during the times of the Federal Republic prompted the alliance between the DPA and the DDC, to this day still in power, which landed Leandros with the top job.

Recently divorced from her 20-year husband, Peter Reynolds, a top executive at the Consortium and heir to the powerful New England Reynolds family, Prime Minister Leandros has justified her early departure by citing her personal troubles.

However, many believe this is but a tactic to reinforce the DDC's strength in the Houses of Parliament, due to the wearing down of the DPA's popularity and the surge of the DDC's own one, which was only being weighed down by Leandros' personal image.

This is why the Socialist Party of Derecta and the Libs have already announced their abstention during the voting of dissolution of the Houses of Parliament this afternoon, in hopes that many rogue DPA Senators decide not to follow Mrs Leandros' partisan wishes.
The DPA would want to retain its 238 Senators and 65 Congresspeople, as opposed to the 56 and 29 held by the DDC.

A vote to dissolve the Houses of Parliament requires a majority of approvals over dismissals. Leandros now needs 148 votes for it to prosper. 92 members of the DPA must be willing to give Mrs Leandros the ability to abandon Eleutheria Palace.
