Profile on the five Spitzenkandidaten of the 2019 Derectan General Elections
Parliament has just been dissolved and already the four main parties in Derecta, the Derectan Popular Alliance (DPA), the Socialist Party of Derecta (SPD), the Derectan Democratic Confluence (DDC) and the Libs, and an unknown fifth runner-up, the Federalist Party of Derecta (FPD), have presented their lead candidates.
- Dame Viviana Ricchetti, former European Councillor, Premier Commissioner and Deputy Prime Minister, is the DPA candidate.
- Pedro Vilafranca, former Mayor of Olyria and Minister of Employment under the 2001-2005 Beaulieu Government, is the SPD candidate.
- Cayetana de Válcarcel-Aranjuez y Pérez de Viñastre, Duchess of Athenaesios, former Minister of Education, Culture and Sport under the 2017-2019 Leandros Government, is the DDC candidate.
- Tomás de Miranda y San José-Cabestruelo, Count of Agramonte, is the Libs candidate.
- Giorgos Loukides, former Senator for Olympaseia under the SPD from 1989 to 2007, is the FPD candidate.
This race to Eleutheria Palace is not only peculiar due to it being the result of the calling of a snap election.
For the first time in the history of Derecta as a republic, two lead candidates are nobles.
- Cayetana de Válcarcel-Aranjuez y Pérez de Viñastre, Duchess of Athenaesios, has been called to succeed Violet Leandros as leader of the Derectan Democratic Confluence.
- Tomás de Miranda y San José-Cabestruelo, Count of Agramonte, claimed the leadership of the Libs after its former leader, James Hartington, abandoned the political life earlier this year.
Although the first Derectan Constitution implemented after the proclamation of the Federal Republic on April 1835 forbade noblepeople from becoming Members of the Senate or Congress, the Derectan Government and the aspiring royal family of the Targans reached an agreement in 1947 establishing the mere symbolism attached to nobility titles under Derectan law. Since then, the aspiring monarch of the time has been able to grant such titles under the consent of the Derectan Government.
Also, for the first time in 75 years, there are no candidates of Anglo-Saxon ascendance running for Prime Minister.
- Cayetana de Válcarcel-Aranjuez y Pérez de Viñastre (DDC), Tomás de Miranda y San José-Cabestruelo (the Libs) and Pedro Vilafranca (SPD) are of Hispanic ascendence.
- Dame Viviana Ricchetti (DPA) and Giorgos Loukides (FPD) are both of Hellenic descendence, with Dame Ricchetti having Inquistan ancestors.
Traditionally, Anglo-Saxons have been the most economically-powerful ethnic group in Derecta, due to the fact they arrived during the time of the establishment of a protectorate by the British Empire during the mid 18th century. The Britons who settled in Derecta back then originated from wealthy families that wanted their heirs to supervise and control their economical interests here during the times of the "Provinces of Derecta".
The only other two elections where Anglo-Saxons were not represented by one of the lead candidates were the 1944 and 1868 General Elections.
Furthermore, here are the main views of each candidate on a number of issues affecting Derectans:
Candidate Federalism Dame Ricchetti (DPA) The DPA pushed for the suppression of the federal division of the Republic in order to cut costs originating from the duplicity of institutions. I [Dame Ricchetti] supported this measure. Vilafranca (SPD) It is still too early to tell whether the suppression of federalism has been good or bad for Derectans. Duchess of Athenaesios (DDC) Regionalism must be developed in order to find a middle ground between jingoistic centralism and corrupt federalism. Count of Agramonte (the Libs) The regionalism which characterises the current division of the Republic is to be replaced by an omnipotent central government. The unity of Derecta should be preserved at any cost. Loukides (FPD) Federalism must be reinstated at once, as it is the only way cultural diversity and social cohesion between ethnic groups can be protected.
Candidate Climate Change Dame Ricchetti (DPA) R&D should be encouraged in order to find the best technology to tackle climate change. We won't know what technological advancements we will discover if we never try and find them. Vilafranca (SPD) We have to stop big companies from killing Mother Earth. It is not fair that they who reap the benefits of polluting activities leave us barren fields and unbreathable air without there being consequences to their actions. Duchess of Athenaesios (DDC) We must develop comprehensive policies that reduce pollution whilst respecting our market-based economic structures. Those who think capitalism and environmental sustainability are irreconcilable are wrong. Count of Agramonte (the Libs) Climate change? Nonsense. I say surge of tourism thanks to sunnier days. Loukides (FPD) We must rethink our ways of consuming. That way, companies won't want to produce as much as they do and pollution will decrease dramatically.
Candidate Taxation Dame Ricchetti (DPA) Progressive taxation is the best solution, as long as the burden of fiscality does not weigh down on consumption, nor does it encourage big patricians to take their money elsewhere. Vilafranca (SPD) No more moguls avoiding to pay taxes. Their wealth is the result of our hard work. They should pay for our hospitals, our education, our highways and our pensions. Duchess of Athenaesios (DDC) Do more with less. Optimise government spending and reduce the amount of taxes everyone has to pay. That newly-available money will become the investments and consumption of the future. Count of Agramonte (the Libs) Away with taxation altogether. Let the free-market provide what the State offers at loss. Police, Army and Justice, that's all a government should care for. Loukides (FPD) Taxation should be a matter devolved to each region. The Federal Republic never achieved this transfer of powers, but I believe it would benefit all Derectans for their taxes to be delivered to a closer institution than the Ministry of Treasury.
Candidate European Union Dame Ricchetti (DPA) I have worked to promote Derectan interests in Europe, before becoming Premier Commissioner and defending our common European values. Under my lead, Derecta shall claim its rightful place as one of the major powers in the Union Vilafranca (SPD) Europe means solidarity. Europe means fraternity. Europe can't turn a blind eye to the exploiting of its common worker. I shall fight to make this clear. Duchess of Athenaesios (DDC) We are the fourth economic power in the European Union. Let's work hard so we can become the first. A DDC government in Derecta means a brighter future for us in Europe. Count of Agramonte (the Libs) We should join the ranks of those countries that are sceptical of the union's overreach in powers. We have delivered too much of our national sovereignty to Europolis. I say we take back what's ours. Loukides (FPD) Each region should be allowed to elect their European Councillor. The post should be shared between them for fair and equal periods of time. One government-appointed representative is not enough to have the voices of our people heard. -
Elections in Derecta
General elections are celebrated in Derecta every four years (or when the Parliament requests so) to choose Derecta's next national politicians. Congressmen/women and Senators are elected through universal suffrage. Then, the procedures to choose the Senate's High Consul and Congress' Proconsul begin. When they are elected, Senators have to choose the next Prime Minister of Derecta. A candidate must receive an absolute majority of votes from the Lower house in order to be appointed to office. If he/she doesn't obtain the absolute majority of votes, a second session is held 48h after the first one. Then, the candidate must only receive a simple majority of votes.
Voting in Derecta is completely computerised. Voters go to their electoral college and vote thanks to a database of biometric (fingerprint) recognition systems that render physical documents unnecessary, ensure the absence of voting-fraud and help with statistics. Votes always remain secret, and no-one has a way of knowing who votes for what. When voting in a circumscription ends, all the data stored at the voting stations is downloaded into a special encrypted hard-drive and sent to the National Electoral College, in Dikaíoma, where it is all put together. Then, results are published.
Hacking the elections is virtually impossible, as, even though votes are cast through computers, they are not connected to any network and are specially protected with insulation made with a special material that blocks any waves, signals or jammings.
During these elections, Senators are elected depending on the number of votes their party receives regionally. There are 95 chairs from Dytikós, 80 from Scheria, 70 from San Marcos, 60 from Williamsborough, 60 from Kingston, 50 from Labrada and 35 from New England. > 450 chairs in the Senate.
Congressmen/women are elected depending on the number of votes their party receives in each province. there are three chairs/province > 150 chairs in Congress.
