A Joint Statement on the European Commission Elections, April-May 2020
-
Citizens of Europe,
We have decided to write together to discuss how important the European Commission election has become for the destiny of our European Union. Now, more so than ever before, we are experiencing the systematic and widespread deconstruction of our values and the systems that we have worked in putting in place to protect them. We have waited too long on the sidelines, too long in silence, but we raise our voices now to be heard by all of the free nations of Europe.
We are facing a pivotal moment in our history. We are fighting for our freedoms and our society on two fronts: those that wish to segregate into some kind of mercantilist, decentralised laissez-faire region and those that wish to take it upon themselves to manipulate and bend our society, our nations, and our peoples to their will. We will not allow ourselves to be strongarmed into compromising our values, our freedoms, and our rights as individuals, as nationstates, and as members of this Union. This cabal of greed and selfishness cannot win.
It has come to our attention that the Kingdom of Reitzmag has been abusing its newfound influence as a founding member of ELDR. While we applaud any effort to give a voice to alternative points of view, we are horrified at the manner in which the Reitzman government is using this new organisation. Buying votes with promises of defence from a nation that has already proven its inability to even defend itself from external and internal threats is misleading the vulnerable and taking advantage of less developed nations in this Union. Furthermore, the use of one our most sacred and critical European institutions, the ECoJ, an institution meant to protect the freedoms of all Europeans, for political gain should not be tolerated. No nation or individual should be able abuse our institutions and be able to continue without refute.
What the European Union needs is a team of Commissioners who are ready to fight to protect the rights that we have cherished and expand opportunities and prosperity to all Europeans, whether they have been around for one month or one decade. Europe needs a team of Commissioners who are ready to listen to the wishes of the people. Europe needs a team that will reach out to all who seek her. Our Union should stand as a shining house on the hill, lighting the way for all of us in the name of democracy, freedom, prosperity and equality. Look at the Europe we have made together, a Europe where people are free to marry whomever they love and not be penalised by nation states. We’ve made a Europe that stands up for the explicit human rights of all people. We’ve made a Europe where people can travel to every European nation and expect that they too can build their dream there. This is the Europe we fight for and this is the Europe we must protect. That’s why we, Elisabeth Baschet and Angela Merkel, endorse the team of EPA commissioner candidates. It’s more than just an election, it’s a clear choice between division and unity. Choose Unity, Choose the EPA!
