      FEDERAL DATA CENTRE SURVEY

A few days before the big election debate, the CDF has published the first official survey on the federal elections on 25 September.

According to this poll, the Liberal Party would win the elections with 100 MPs against 79 Conservatives.

The General Diet would be very fragmented, with the entry of up to four new parties (Communists, Monarchists, Nationalists and Neathians). The rise of the Vetton Union in the polls is surprising, although it may be a mirage.

Hugo Mendoza could become Governor General with a complex parliamentary arithmetic, including Federalists, Neathians and with the abstention of the Social Democrats, although we do not know how it will turn out in the end.

      THE ELECTION DEBATE - SUMMARY

Last night's election debate was conducted by the well-known journalist António Fernandes. It began at 9 p.m. with the conservative candidate and former Governor General taking the floor. Orato defended his measures and his performance at the head of the government in recent years, and charged harshly against the liberals for threatening national stability.

      alt text
      The debate set

Hugo Mendoza, on the other hand, barely entered into the former president's criticisms. He defended a liberal programme that would allow the creation and expansion of businesses in the country, defended his laws that had already been passed, and defended the legacy of the Liberals in coalition with the CDU.

      alt text
Hugo Mendoza, the main candidate to the Governor General Office

The social democratic plea was truly interesting. They reached out to the Mendoza Liberals to reach country agreements, and advocated strengthening the welfare state in Lusitania and Vettonia. They attacked right-wing collectives, especially the National Front, for provoking serious riots without cause.

Federalist statements left much to be desired. Both Lusitanians and Vettonians advocated the transfer of powers to the federated states. Undoubtedly, the Lusitanian Federal Front was the better of the two, managing to reach a point of equidistance and moderation.

The last to speak of having parliamentary representation were the far-right National Front. They accused the Liberals of staging a coup d'état, and continued to repeat their conspiracy theories about the recent fall of the government. They were, of course, the big losers in the debate. They were ridiculed by all their political rivals.

The controversy was served by the absence of the parties without representation in the Diet. Such as the communists, monarchists, nationalists and neathians. The winners of the debate in terms of dialectics were the Social Democrats, a fact that could have an impact on the polls.

The Liberal Party wins the first round of the presidential election

Liberal candidate Elisa Ubrique won a slim majority in the first round. She beat President Augusto Dominguez, and both candidates will go on to the second round, to be held on Sunday 12 June.
This first round has been the closest in number of votes between the different candidates ever held since the return of democracy.

Ubrique stated that this is a very important step for those who seek a country that is more integrated into the European Union and that overcomes isolationism. She has promised major investments if she becomes the first female President of the Republic.

Conservative Augusto Domínguez, has preferred to remain cautious. He said that all is not yet lost and that there is still a second round to be held.

What seems very clear is that the Liberals will have the support of the left, which will call for a vote to the centre to prevent a new Conservative government.

The big loser of the day was the far-right National Front, which came last with barely 200,000 votes.

    • Culture in Lusitania and Vettonia

      Languages:
Lusitania and Vettonia is a country consisting of two official languages, one co-official and one protected. Spanish is official in the whole territory, and Portuguese is official in the area of Vettonia. Rumi is a co-official language spoken in the northernmost parts of Lusitania, and the last strongholds of Neathian in the Marcia Mountains are carefully protected.

      Local customs

A day in Lusitania and Vettonia usually starts at 7am, with a very light breakfast. The morning working day lasts from 8am to 3pm and is followed by a light lunch, often eaten in the cafés that line the streets of the cities or in people's own homes. Although there is a working day in the afternoon, it is not the most common. The afternoon is usually a time for rest or lighter work. The school day ends at 2 p.m., so many parents take care of their children. It is common to see families on the streets at this time.

The custom of gathering in the cafés, again at around 7 p.m., is very common. This custom is intensified on Fridays and Saturdays, and the streets are an absolute spectacle at this time of day. Dinner usually takes place between 21:00 and 22:00. And the country enjoys a nightlife that often extends into the early hours of the morning.

      Local Gastronomy

The local gastronomy is very varied due to the many climates in the area. Towards the coast of the Come Sea it is very common to eat fish such as sturgeon, which are able to inhabit this saltwater lake. Sturgeon can be seen in almost all coastal towns and in any restaurant menu.

      alt text
Sturgeon, typical food in Lusitania and Vettonia

In the meat sector, the most popular meat is cecina ham, produced from the meat of cows that inhabit the meadows of the south. A highly prized bird is the Egyptian Vulture, which is exported from the Marcia Mountains throughout the country, and is considered a typical delicacy to be eaten at Christmas time.

The cuisine becomes much more rural as you move further into the country, and the Lusitania area has a simple Biltrada Soup made with bread dipped in vegetable stock from the garden and a few pieces of ham.

As you enter the northern deserts, camel meat becomes very common, but the risk of spoilage meant that some greenhouse crops such as rice and cereals could be introduced, which have led to a boom in products such as biscuits.

Lusitania and Vettonia is rich in cheeses, among the mildest of which is Augustus cheese, made from cow's milk. The most popular cheese is the Siapal cheese from Olissipo, a cheese made from goat's milk and put in sturgeon chambers for two months and preserved in salt. It is therefore a salty cheese with a slightly fishy taste.

The country is a wine producer in Portus Cale, creating a unique and quality wine called Vino de Harino, marketed all over the world. Lusitanian beer is also well known within its borders.

      alt text

      Typical costume

The typical costume in the culture of Lusitania and Vettonia is a ruralised heritage of the ancient Latin paenula. Together with sandals in imitation of the Latin caligae, it is usually worn in brown, combined with a beret of the same colour. It is a very simple garment that allowed the use of the hood to protect against inclement weather in the mountains. It can sometimes be worn with a belt.

This costume is so popular that one army unit, the Praca, a unit dedicated to mountain fighting, wears it in their parades and official events. This is where the expression "Dress the Praca" comes from, which is said to someone about their clothing when they are preparing to go on country or mountain routes.

      alt text

      Literature

In the literary field, authors of the stature of Ordonno Selmeles stand out in archaic prose. He compiled in his book "Legends of Yesterday and Tomorrow" the story of the mythical character "Lucius Manaricus", a great medieval warrior.

In more contemporary styles, Nuno Paneado and Luis Hernando stand out in poetry. Gastón Méndez is considered to be the best prose author of recent years. He became world famous for his book "Si me preguntas mañana" ("If you ask me tomorrow"), a brutal criticism of the dictatorship of Dintero in the form of a novel. He spent years in exile for the novel. The book tells the story of two families, one republican and one monarchist close to the dictatorial regime. It is a love story with betrayals and a terrible and stark description of the period.

      #anchor(Liberals make history)

Elisa Ubrique becomes the first president in the history of Lusitania and Vettonia. She obtained 300,000 more votes than the conservatives of former President Augusto Dominguez, and was thus officially proclaimed President of the Republic.

It is not yet clear who will be the next Governor General. But all bets point to a government of cohabitation with the current chief executive, Jose Miguel Orato, as Governor General as long as the Conservatives are the first parliamentary force.

The new president has a degree in law and economics. She has had a meteoric rise through the Liberal ranks, having risen from the mayor's office in Salamanca to the office of head of state. Considered a pragmatic and serious politician, she is expected to bring a sense of serenity to national politics.

      alt text

Elisa Ubrique has announced that she will take important decisions in the first days of her term of office. She has announced an increase in military spending and the creation of a task force to address the problem of child begging. She has also said she will talk to major companies in Exluve to get them to invest outside the borders, and does not rule out short-term international trips to secure investment. In Ubrique's words: "It is time for our country to become an active member of the European Union, it is time for us to strengthen our external ties and move away from isolationism". There are also rumours of constitutional reform.

In addition, he has issued a threat to the Conservative Party. He warns that if they do not cooperate with the country's progress he could try to form a government with social democrats and federalists. Doing so would destroy the spirit of the grand coalition and put a stranglehold on the right-wing parties.

What is undeniable is that Lusitania and Vettonia has entered a new era. Much is expected of Ubrique, which comes to power at a time of economic slowdown.

    • RE: Freedom of Navigation Act

We have waited to hear all the proposals and issues raised about the law to be voted on. We have noted with concern the tension generated in some cases by disagreement with the draft legislation, but the federal government's position will nevertheless be as follows:

We support the intention of the law to regulate maritime passage and put an end to the various conflicts that have arisen and will arise in this regard, however, we are seriously concerned that this law will serve as an authorisation for any type of ship to enter territorial waters. We therefore support the intention also in Amendment No 5 to exclude military vessels from free passage.

We also understand the dilemma created with regard to rights to exploit territorial waters. We also believe that each state should have the right to permit or prohibit the passage of vessels through its territorial waters on the basis of its own laws and not on the basis of Community laws. However, we agree that no state should prohibit free passage through the straits. We consider ourselves entitled to express an opinion on this matter when our only access to the sea is a navigable river not claimed by any country.

Although this is our humble and inexpert opinion, we would also like to announce that we will follow the debate thoroughly and listen to any allegations or corrections that our colleagues would like to make to this opinion, as our vote on this matter has not been decided yet.

Orato drops bombshell just days before the referendum

The Governor General, Jose Miguel Orato, has formally announced that he will submit himself to a motion of confidence in the General Diet. To this end, the Consul of the Sejm has called an extraordinary plenary session to debate it tomorrow, without giving the political parties time to prepare.

      alt text

Orato Gonzo's cabinet could fall tomorrow if his liberal partners withdraw their support. But it seems unlikely that they will dare sacrifice the government just before voting on its biggest agenda item. What is remarkable is the political strategy of the Governor General, who has decided to force the Liberals to take a stand and choose.

If the government loses the confidence of the House tomorrow, the President of the Republic will have to dismiss the cabinet.

Lusitania and Vettonia History - VOL 2
From the Middle Ages to Nowdays

The Middle Ages marked the end of Latin culture as such. Lusitania, Vettonia and Salamantica evolved in separate ways. At this time the Rumian culture of the desert was born. They formed a fourth kingdom on today's territory. The area of the Sea of Come was an area of conflict for a thousand years. In 1123 Salamantica fell to the Rumi. And the first Imperial Coalition took place. A union of Lusitania and Vettonia in the form of a military alliance against them.

The result of these coalitions were eight wars, which gradually tipped the balance in favour of the Catholic powers. The kings Nicholas I of Lusitania and Afonso IV of Vettonia defeated the Rumies at the Battle of the Amagirras (1561), and Lusitania and Vettonia spread northwards, founding cities such as Capera and Evora.

After the defeat of the common enemy, the rivalry between the two kingdoms was rekindled. The turning point came in 1743, when Vettonia invaded Lusitania in the Lusitanian-Vettonian War. This war began with victory for the men of Nuno VII, but they were defeated at the Siege of Emerita and began to lose ground. Finally in 1779 the Lusitanians conquered Olissipo, and Ferdinand III became King of Lusitania and Vettonia.

The kings of Lusitania and Vettonia were in this order:

      -Fernando I (III) (1779-1786).
-Carlos I: (1786-1825) Who had to face a large-scale Vettonian insurrection in 1810. Built the Palais de la Marine
-Hugo I: (1825-1854) He had strong disagreements with the liberals. He suffered the 1st Liberal War against the forces of Pedro Casanova. He won and absolutism was maintained for several more years.
-Carlos II: (1854-1881) The only peaceful reign in common history, he is considered by far the best king to have existed in Lusitania and Vettonia. He surrounded himself with advisors from both crowns and legalised Portuguese as an official language for the first time. He granted a Carta Otorgada with rights and obligations for the citizens, but he was absolutist.
-Manuel I: (1881-1893) He is considered a very fragile king. During his mandate, Commander Jesús Paracio promoted a military pronunciamiento that led to the II Liberal War (1883-1887). The King's forces lost, and he had to sign the Constitution of 1887. He was assassinated in 1893.
-Hugo II (1893-1900) He ascended to the throne when he was 6 years old under the regency of General Gravão, the first Vettonio to have full power since the union. His reign was brief and convulsive, due to problems with the Liberal Movement and the Workers' Movement. He never governed effectively, on April 23rd, 1900, a command of the Royal Army surrounded the Palace under the command of the Republican Colonel Alfredo Cano. The tyranny exercised by Gravão took its toll on the crown, the King was forced to abdicate and the 1st Republic of Lusitania and Vettonia was proclaimed.

      alt text
      One denary of Hugo II

But democracy only lasted from 1900 to 1925, the fragility of the Republican system caused Martin Dintero to stage a new coup d'état against a very unpopular government. He installed a fascist regime that lasted from 1925 to 1957, his main ideals were family, religion and nationalism. The regime ended abruptly with his own assassination in 1957. After his death a military junta was in charge of preserving the dictatorship for six years, years in which they fought against the labor movement. In 1963, the June Revolution expelled the military from power and established the II Republic of Lusitania and Vettonia. Hernando Trillo was the President of the Republic, but the communists won the 1964 elections and proclaimed the People's Republic, purged the military commanders and began their dictatorship under the leadership of Julio Ortíz Macaobado.

      alt text

The People's Republic fell in 1973, during student protests. The students became the regime's most serious problem. And it was a law student, Lucas Salor Vega, who as a form of protest used the constitution to proclaim himself Interim President of the People's Republic in a performance at the Universidad Obrera. Surprisingly, the university students took it seriously, started a Student Strike in which they raised the National Flag (used from the kings to the People's Republic), and confronted the Proletariat Police in heavy police charges, which the only thing they achieved was that the students got hold of some firearms.

The protest spread to the universities, and the streets were filled with barricades. The Macaobado government proclaimed Martial Law. But the military, still upset by the recent purges, refused to support it. The General Jacaio went to the University, besieged by his men, and presented arms in front of Lucas Salor. Then, in a peaceful march known as the Paper Revolution, the military deposed the People's Republic and hailed the III Republic of Lusitania and Vettonia. Lucas Salor went out to the balcony to proclaim it, and announced that it would be Federal.

      alt text
Protest in the University at the begining of the revolution

The 1974 elections gave victory to the Student Front, against the traditional Conservatives and Social Democrats. The first government of Lucas Salor approved the 1974 Constitution, which stated that the official name of the state was "Federal Republic of Lusitania and Vettonia". This government fought for equality among the federated states, stabilized the country and finally called elections, which it did not run for. The victory went to the Social Democratic Party.

A journalist of TLV is the first asking the Governor General

J: Mr Orato. Are you saying Head of the State collaborated in the complot against government.
O: What I said is that we did not have the the desired collaboration. They were looking ahead to the elections.

      Another journalist ask him

J: Do you know who will be the next Governor General?
O: I have talked with Elisa Ubrique and she is going to dissolve the Diet. So no. I don't know who will be my successor
J: But... If she is going to dissolve the Diet... Who will refrend that Head of the Government?
O: That is not my problem. Conservative party won't accept the presidence of the government. We are preparing ourselves for elections. The next Governor General is a Presidential competence.

A third journalist ask to Orato

J: That means Elisa Ubrique will not be able to nominate a new Governor General?
O: Maybe. That is something she will have to study.
J: Thats a very heavy political crisis
O: I know. But is what liberals have been looking for.

A locutor of RLV asks him

J: Will you be the candidate of the Conservative party for a hypotetical elections
O: Probably, but the party has to decide many things. One thing is clear. We are not going to support any liberal government in the future if they win.
J: So, in that case liberals will have to pact with Social-Democratics and Federalists?
O: Surely. But first citizens have to talk in the urns. There will not be more questions. He says, surprising the whole room.

At the exit of the Palace, the television stations have already gathered. The media were in a state of bewilderment. They all expected the President of the Republic to make an early appearance to explain the situation in the future. The reality is that Lusitania and Vettonia now have no government, the feared political instability has arrived. No one knows how far it may escalate.

In the words of its president, Santiago Muñiz: "It is an opportunity to expand our business around the world and to distribute Lusitania and Vettonia Oil".

    • RE: Loan System Reform | European Council Discussion

After careful consideration of the proposal, we have come to the same conclusion. The main danger is to turn the EDA precisely into a lending agency. As the Councillor of the United Duchies has already said, it is a moral duty to help the less economically capable states to develop by means of grants.

The final problem is not only that, although it is true that new agencies can always be created to subsidise states, it would be an unnecessary creation of bureaucracy when it is already done, while the Development Agency would become a huge bank financed by interest, interest that would only serve to put many states further into debt.

Nevertheless, we are open to further consideration of this proposal, but in its current terms we are not convinced by it.

Orato Gonzo arrives in a packed press room. All the reporters fall silent before him. He sits all alone at the centre of the table, solemnly. He adjusts the microphone and checks that everything is ready. He holds some papers in his hand and places them gently on the table. His hand trembles. With a theatrical gesture he looks at a camera in the background and begins to read.

"Citizens of Lusitania and Vettonia. For the past five years I have been leading the destinies of our Federation. Only history will be able to judge our work with true perspective. But I believe that my successive governments have done all they could and more to bring the nation to a successful conclusion. The economic growth statistics bear us out.

The Conservative Party suffered a setback in the Presidential Elections last June. The people withdrew their confidence in us for a second term as head of state. With the Liberal Party we have had a short-lived coalition government to run this country. This government, among other things, has succeeded in making substantial changes to the constitution which, although not to everyone's liking, represent a step forward for the future of our people.

But it has been precisely the liberals, imbued with an electioneering spirit, who have dedicated themselves to hindering the government. We have had no cooperation from the Head of State, and the party has dedicated itself to proposing laws that our principles prevent us from supporting. Not even in a motion of confidence against our government, your government, were they able to have any sense of statehood and support the common good.

It is for all these reasons that I have decided to end my mandate. And to communicate to Elisa Ubrique, as President of the Republic, my resignation and that of my entire government. The Council of Ministers has decided to put an end to its authority and to return power to the people in their highest representation, the General Diet.

It has been a long but fruitful five years, five years in which we have had many friends and enemies. But I hope that the nation will rise to the occasion. I wish my successor the best of luck, for all that it implies for us."

"Any questions?" Asks Orato after finishing. Many hands rise in the air.

      Massive Manifestation in Emerita Augusta

Hundreds of people have gathered in the streets of the capital to protest against child abandonment and in favour of the controversial "Licence to Raise Children". The Plaza de la Independencia is now full of people demanding the introduction of this measure as a way to reduce child abuse and neglect.

The leader of the National Front, Pedro Laís, is demanding that the government rectify its position and pass the measure or he will withdraw his parliamentary support. The Minister for the Family, Sergio Martín, maintains the government's refusal and accuses the National Front of being extremists, and of wanting to eliminate fundamental rights such as the conception of children.

The opposition as a bloc has called on the government not to give in to pressure from its partners, and it is not ruled out that the Liberals or the Lusitanians will facilitate the survival of Jose Miguel Orato's cabinet if the five far-right deputies withdraw their support.

The government has announced that it will take measures to remove all such minors from the streets, and calls on the population to remain calm and not support those who seek to curtail their rights.

Large disturbances during the Territorial Guard protests

The worst fears of the authorities were confirmed and the ultra group called Territorial Guard caused chaos in the main streets of Emerita Augusta yesterday.

      alt text

Militants of the criminal group arrived from all over the country, and the Vigiles were out late into the night trying to contain the protests. During the demonstrations there were assaults on bank branches and shops, barricades were erected and containers were set on fire.

The tensest moments came when the Vigiles had to fire into the air to prevent an attempted assault on the General Diet.

      alt text

The entire political class condemned the incident. The Guterres government has announced that it will declare the Territorial Guard a terrorist group, due to the security threats posed by their protests. At this hour, the Vigils and other police forces have arrested 732 members of the group, accused of crimes of vandalism and attacks on the police.

Emerita Augusta wakes up from the nightmare.
