Towards the end of International Neutrality?
Hugo Mendoza's visit to Portus Cale seemed to be a mere formality in his national travels now that he is head of government; but it has turned out to be crucial in how the country will be conceived in the future.
The Governor General said in his speech to the General Chamber of Vettonia that the Federation has lived too long in and out of the European Union at the same time. It has sinned of isolationism and bad neighbourliness with its potential strategic partners. He pledged to respect the Camilo Guterres government's pacts with Spain and to strengthen its external action with a view to increasing the nation's importance within the EU.
The talk shows are ablaze on all the country's radio and television stations with these declarations. Many conservative circles are wary of a general opening, as is the extreme left, which is Eurosceptic. But the government has the situation where it wants it, and everything points to the cabinet working for general integration.

Session of Support for Hugo Mendoza as Governor General
It was 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday 11 October 2022 when a communiqué from the National Palace announced that Elisa Ubrique had put an end to the government of Camilo Guterres to request the winner of the elections: Hugo Mendoza, to form a new government.
In accordance with the constitution, the new General Diet met today to give, or not, its confidence to the new head of government.
The session began at 9:00 a.m. with a speech by the Governor General-elect. During a 3-hour speech, he outlined the main lines of his electoral programme and the government he wishes to form.
Mendoza emphasised his Europeanist and democratic intentions. He promised to reach agreements with everyone and to establish a moderate government open to political dialogue.
He also mentioned his intentions to continue with the liberalisation of the economy and the elimination of obstacles to entrepreneurship in Lusitania and Vettonia. He defended his commitment to create a new economic and social power.
The former Governor General and leader of the Conservative Party, Jose Miguel Orato, spoke for an hour. Orato accused the candidate to form a government of being a traitor and opportunist. He denounced that he had suffered a full-fledged legislative coup d'état and that he does not intend to resign as party leader. He has indicated that, as long as he leads the Conservative Party, there will be no pacts with the government except on essential matters.
He added that he would vote NO to the candidate's investiture.
Orato, in an old image
For 45 minutes, in descending order of speaking time, the Social Democrat Jorge Mazares spoke. Mazares had announced a government pact with Mendoza the previous day, so he devoted his speaking time to explaining the lines of action he expected from the new coalition government. He called for social investments and a new health and education law to replace the current ones, which date from 1996 and 2007 respectively.
In the rest of the speeches, the support of the Lusitanian Federalists and the Indigenist Party "Victoria Neatia" and the abstention of both the Vettona Union and Concilium Lusitanae stood out. The Communists, Monarchists, Sovereigntists and Ultraconservatives announced their refusal.

h this result, Hugo Mendoza was elected as Governor General. This marks the beginning of a new era and a new constitutional legislature, which will be the 15th Legislature.
Elections Results
The federal elections took place on 25 September 2022. They yielded the following national results, which we will gradually break down.
PARTY | DEPUTIES | DIFERENCE | % of Votes |
---|---|---|---|
LP | 100 | +12 | 33.33% |
CDU | 65 | -76 | 21.67% |
LVSP | 60 | +8 | 20.00% |
LFF | 25 | +12 | 8.33% |
LPC | 18 | +18 | 6.00% |
DMP | 16 | +16 | 5.33% |

NF | 2 | -3 | 0.67% |
RVNP | 2 | +2 | 0.67% |
NEA | 2 | +2 | 0.67% |
The government will now depend on the Social Democrats. With their likely abstention, plus the favourable votes of the Lusitanian Federalists, the Liberals would emerge victorious in the second round of voting in the Diet. But a coalition government pact that could create a larger majority is not ruled out.
Those votes will begin on 12 October, next week.
THE ELECTION DEBATE - SUMMARY
Last night's election debate was conducted by the well-known journalist António Fernandes. It began at 9 p.m. with the conservative candidate and former Governor General taking the floor. Orato defended his measures and his performance at the head of the government in recent years, and charged harshly against the liberals for threatening national stability.
The debate set
Hugo Mendoza, on the other hand, barely entered into the former president's criticisms. He defended a liberal programme that would allow the creation and expansion of businesses in the country, defended his laws that had already been passed, and defended the legacy of the Liberals in coalition with the CDU.
Hugo Mendoza, the main candidate to the Governor General Office
The social democratic plea was truly interesting. They reached out to the Mendoza Liberals to reach country agreements, and advocated strengthening the welfare state in Lusitania and Vettonia. They attacked right-wing collectives, especially the National Front, for provoking serious riots without cause.
Federalist statements left much to be desired. Both Lusitanians and Vettonians advocated the transfer of powers to the federated states. Undoubtedly, the Lusitanian Federal Front was the better of the two, managing to reach a point of equidistance and moderation.
The last to speak of having parliamentary representation were the far-right National Front. They accused the Liberals of staging a coup d'état, and continued to repeat their conspiracy theories about the recent fall of the government. They were, of course, the big losers in the debate. They were ridiculed by all their political rivals.
The controversy was served by the absence of the parties without representation in the Diet. Such as the communists, monarchists, nationalists and neathians. The winners of the debate in terms of dialectics were the Social Democrats, a fact that could have an impact on the polls.
FEDERAL DATA CENTRE SURVEY
A few days before the big election debate, the CDF has published the first official survey on the federal elections on 25 September.
According to this poll, the Liberal Party would win the elections with 100 MPs against 79 Conservatives.
The General Diet would be very fragmented, with the entry of up to four new parties (Communists, Monarchists, Nationalists and Neathians). The rise of the Vetton Union in the polls is surprising, although it may be a mirage.
Hugo Mendoza could become Governor General with a complex parliamentary arithmetic, including Federalists, Neathians and with the abstention of the Social Democrats, although we do not know how it will turn out in the end.
This provisional survey can change completly after the electoral debate. This Sunday in TLV-1
Camilo Guterres arrived just at the right moment. He was not the most punctual head of government, nor was he the most stable of the moment. But it was his duty to attend these summits to play the role he had to play at the time: That of the ruler of a nation in crisis.
He landed at the airport and soberly went to the official car. He was nervous, in a few months he had gone from being a lawyer to rubbing shoulders with the greats, but it was time to show that he was not just a provisional ruler, that he would leave a legacy. And that summit was fundamental, he was going there, not his enemies. He was going there, not those who were now fighting for power in the election campaign.
The election campaign for the federal elections in Lusitania and Vettonia begins with Hugo Mendoza's visit to Olissipo to defend his candidacy.
Mendoza declared: "I dream of a federation where everyone has the opportunity to create their own businesses and be free. That is my dream, freedom and human rights. To fully integrate into the European Union and leave the past to face the future".
The Liberals are the favourites in the polls but, barring a surprise, they will have to make a deal to form a government.
Large disturbances during the Territorial Guard protests
The worst fears of the authorities were confirmed and the ultra group called Territorial Guard caused chaos in the main streets of Emerita Augusta yesterday.
Militants of the criminal group arrived from all over the country, and the Vigiles were out late into the night trying to contain the protests. During the demonstrations there were assaults on bank branches and shops, barricades were erected and containers were set on fire.
The tensest moments came when the Vigiles had to fire into the air to prevent an attempted assault on the General Diet.
The entire political class condemned the incident. The Guterres government has announced that it will declare the Territorial Guard a terrorist group, due to the security threats posed by their protests. At this hour, the Vigils and other police forces have arrested 732 members of the group, accused of crimes of vandalism and attacks on the police.
Emerita Augusta wakes up from the nightmare.
Demonstrations called for today with 5 days to go until the election campaign
The demonstrations have been called by the "Territorial Guard", which is linked to the far-right "National Front". Police forces in the capital are on high alert in view of the latest statements by the National leader, Pedro Laís, in which he maintains his accusation that the head of state is a coup leader. He has also called on "the popular masses" to bring the situation back to constitutional order.
The Territorial Guard is a violent and radical right-wing extremist group, famous for its violent shows of force and demonstrations. They are known for the riots on 22 May 2010, against the government of Hugo Gomez on the eve of the federal elections in which he was to be re-elected. The elections almost failed to take place due to the group's attempts to collapse the system, and a series of clashes with the extreme left led to the intervention of the Vigiles. During the early hours of the morning, the streets were cleared of demonstrators and the elections could be held. 240 people were arrested (187 ultra-rightists and 53 communists). The next day the National Front lost 34 deputies, and the Communist Party, already in a minority, disappeared from the General Diet to this day.
Emérita Augusta holds its breath, fearing a similar episode.
On belhaf of Lusitania and Vettonia, I vote FOR this act.

The Social Democrats announce that the former mayor of Portus Cale, Jorge Mazares, will be the main left-wing party's candidate for power. The possibility of a coalition with the communists is being dismissed.
This is because the Popular Confederation of the Left has announced Martinha Rodrigues as its candidate for the elections next September.
The Vettonians, Lusitanians and the National Front repeat candidates, Afonso Furtado will run for the pro-statehood Vettonians, Angela Diaz for the Lusitanians and Pedro Laís will try to make a comeback with his ultra-right-wing National Front. The major federal parties candidates are now known.
The election campaign is expected to start on August 25.
The Monarchist Democratic Party has also announced that Crown Prince Charles Agrara will be its candidate for the federal elections.
The Democratic Conservative Union announces that Jose Miguel Orato will again be its candidate. The former Governor General will try to reach the top of power again against the liberals.
The Liberal Party anounces Hugo Mendoza as their candidate to Federal Elections
Mendoza, a reputed university teacher, is the new liberal candidate to be the next Governor General. Former major of "Concordia de los Reyes" (Lusitania) and Deputy in the General Diet for 10 years. It is considered as a liberal technocrat, he is famous because of his agreements with the oposittion during the time he was major.
"For us it is a real honour that it is Spain that is inaugurating this new era of diplomatic relations. We would like to remain in close contact with your government in the near future to discuss possible new bilateral or multilateral issues with other states".
"From our side there is not much more. If you would like to know more about this country, do not hesitate to visit, ask questions, read.... The usual" laughs the famous woman with the dyed hair.
