Glorius Calls the Sahara Summit "Success"

    Ianuarius XIV, 2012 AD

"Successful and productive." These were some of the words President Glorius used when describing the outcome of the Sahara Summit during yesterday's Senate session. The Summit saw a meeting between President Glorius and Ministers Fulvius and Telerius; the Occoronian President Fernando Mahanga, his Minister of Foreign Affairs Toledo, and the Ambassadors to Pax Aurea and Marrakechia; and the Prime Minister of Marrakechia, Abdelkarim Sasousia, with his Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Industry. The topic on the table was, of course, the situation of Western Sahara.

While some Senators -- particularly those of the conservative Pars Romana -- had questioned the Commonwealth's expensive Operation Hope and its ultimate benefits to both Pax Aurea and Western Sahara itself, Glorius's lengthy and emotional speech in the Senate seemed to reassure most of the sceptics.

"It is our solemn duty to remain unyielding in our support for a more peaceful future of the Western Sahara region and its people, and turning our back to them now would be a grave error", Glorius emphasized during her address. "The stability and prosperity of Sahara is beneficial not only to Marrakechia, but to the entire Europe. This is now our chance to do our part in the furtherment of peace, human rights, and democracy with action, not just with words."

The President stressed that matters had been discussed in an amiable atmosphere, openly and without circling. "Prime Minister Sasousia understood very well the hesitation and uncertainty that were expressed during the meeting. He gave us direct and clear answers. Then we searched for a solution all parties could agree upon. To me, it is a sign of friendship between countries when even difficult matters can be talked about in such a straightforward and forthright manner."

The Senate is scheduled to vote on continuing the financing of Operation Hope tomorrow.

    "Mahanga Mania" In Pacifica

    Ianuarius XV, 2012 AD

President Fernando Mahanga of the Democratic Republic of Occoron is currently staying in Pacifica with his wife, following the end of the Sahara Summit. The visit of the head-of-state of Pax Aurea's most important ally has raised excitement and curiosity in the city, and many have flocked to the gates of Domus Drusillae to see a glimpse of the VIP guest.

The PR representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have reminded people that President Mahanga is on a personal vacation and not on an official state visit, and that "even Presidents have their rights for privacy."

Nevertheless, it has been reported that President Mahanga has been amiably greeting some of the nosey crowds. It is also assumed that he and President Glorius will have an unofficial meeting during his vacation. The two befriended during Glorius's visit to Montevideo, Occoron last December.

    Senate Says Yes To Hope

    Ianuarius XVI, 2012 AD

The Senate has voted for the continuation of "Operation Hope", the joint Aurean-Occoronian humanitarian relief mission, in Western Sahara. The vote was passed in yesterday's session with an overwhelming majority. Of the 200 Senators, 167 voted in favour of the operation, with 28 opposing, 3 abstaining, and 2 absent.

The outcome of the vote is an important show of support to President Glorius's foreign policy. Had the Senate decided to oppose Operation Hope, or just barely approve the motion, the impact on Glorius's overall influence would have been "considerable", suspect political analysts.

Glorius has been the most vocal proponent of Pax Aurea's humanitarian involvement in the Saharan crisis throughout the fall and winter of 2011. The government showed a unified front during the last debates, with Prime Minister Proctus and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fulvius steadfastly repudiating the criticism of opposition and giving their support to the President.

Harshest words were hurled from the Communist Party and Pars Romana. Friedrich Holtz, the Communist party leader, accused Glorius of merely protecting the interests of Aurean companies flocking to "reconstruct" the devastated region, and completely dismissing the Saharans' hopes of independence. Caius Victorius of the nationalist-conservative Pars Romana, on the other hand, was appalled by the cost of the project, while questioning its benefit to the Aurean people.

"The well-being of our neighbours is beneficial to every soul in the Commonwealth", reminded Minister Fulvius, adding that the instability of Western Sahara would increase the flow of refugees, thus eventually burdening Marrakechia's friends even more.

"I am flabbergasted that helping to create jobs, providing welfare, and assisting economic growth of Western Sahara would be an anathema to the Communist Party", came a dry response from Prime Minister Proctus.

Operation Hope is by far the most important relief project of Pax Aurea at the moment. Approximately 40% of the funds of the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry are directed to Western Sahara.

It is assumed that the decision of the Senate will increase Aurean corporate investments in Sahara and Marrakechia.

Committee To Evaluate Nuclear Threats In EU

    Ianuarius XVII, 2012 AD

Following the nuclear weapons crisis of the junta-controlled Monogolia, the recent announcement by the British government of warhead stockpile reduction, and the intentions of the Imperial Oversector of Dromund Kaas to start developing a nuclear reactor, a new Senate Committee for Nuclear Affairs has been created, under the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence & Security.

Consisting of both Senators and non-politician specialists, including Augurius Arrebus, Professor of Nuclear Physics in the Great Academy of Pacifica, the Committee intends to map and evaluate the development and possible risks related to nuclear power and nuclear weaponry in the European Union. Under scrutiny will also be Pax Aurea's preparedness for a nuclear-related disaster in its vicinity.

Pax Aurea's own stance remains unchanged, and the Commonwealth is not planning on starting a nuclear program of its own. Such a suggestion would face passionate opposition from the majority of both politicians and citizens. Furthermore, Prime Minister Proctus has stressed the importance of self-reliance in matters of energy, reminding that investing in renewable energy sources reduces Pax Aurea's dependance on imported fossil fuels and uranium, thus being financially beneficial on the longer run and minimizing the risk of hindered deliveries during times of international crises.

Maleeka Liszckoszi Held Captive By Dromund Kaas

    Ianuarius XVIII, 2012 AD

BREAKING NEWS -- Shock and disbelief have shaken the entire European Union following the detention of Premier Commissioner Maleeka Liszckoszi by the Imperial Oversector of Dromund Kaas. Mrs Liszckoszi was imprisoned during her diplomatic visit to the newest member of the EU. According to the official Imperial statements, the Premier Commissioner was detained "for no less than 48 hours" following "audacious" demands concerning classified national security-related information. Os Corelia has steadfastly disputed these claims.

According to the latest information of Vox Populi, no footage or other type of proof of Mrs Liszckoszi's well-being has been presented to the international community. In its official statement, Dromund Kaas claims that she is unharmed and being treated well.

The European Council has met in an emergency session and condemned the actions of the Imperial Oversector, presenting a unified front in its defence of the principles of the Union and international justice. Councillors have demanded Dromund Kaas to release the Premier Commissioner immediately, and several have called for strict sanctions to be placed against the aggressor. Some have also hinted that Dromund Kaas's future lies not in the EU whose rules it has decided to disregard.

Councillor Livia Arcturus has voiced Pax Aurea's condemnation over the treatment of Mrs Liszckoszi: "[... ]Grand Moff Kilran has stated that his intentions are to increase the influence of Dromund Kaas in the European Union. [...] Yet his actions defy the very logic of these goals. Holding the Premier Commissioner captive based on completely ludicrous accusations is, dare I say, like shooting oneself in the knee-cap. If Dromund Kaas's intention was to orchestrate a demonstration of power, this it got indeed -- a demonstration of power by the European Union and its democratic institutions", Arcturus said in her speech.

President Glorius has called the government for an emergency session. Vox Populi awaits for further details.

    Glorius: "Madness"

    Ianuarius XVIII, 2012 AD

Following an emergency meeting of the government, President Julia Glorius held a press conference at the steps of the Senate Hall. As expected, she condemned the actions of the leadership of Dromund Kaas, calling the detention of Premier Commissioner Liszckoszi "madness".

"The European Union must resolutely pursue the release of Mrs Liszckoszi and continue to pressure the Imperial Oversector with a single voice. We are dealing with a highly unpredictable and aggressive nation, and this makes the situation extremely volatile. Already, there are rumours of pompous shows of force in the Caspian Sea, and -- this is especially worrying -- news of deportations of various ethnic groups. We need an unwavering front to send a crystal-clear message: Dromund Kaas finds no support and no friends with this kind of disregard to international justice. If they wish to be a part of the European Union, then they must play by its rules."

The President went on to announce that no plane nor ship from Dromund Kaas was allowed to Aurean airports or harbours. Aurean banks would also cease all financial transactions of Imperial origin. Any Imperial citizen seeking for a refugee status citing political persecution as reason will be automatically granted an asylum.

The Commonwealth Says Good-Bye To Its Military

    Ianuarius XIX, 2012 AD

The final implementations of the so-called Actum Glorii, the move to combine Pax Aurea's last remaining semi-military forces into the Federal Police Force, has been completed. With that, the Commonwealth has no officially no armed forces at its disposal.

The old Border Guard, stationed mostly at the vicinity of airports and customs offices, and the more important and visible Coastal Guard, were charged with the protection of the Aurean sovereignty since the 1950s. Their size was gradually reduced, up to a point when the last remaining corvette was turned into a floating museum last September.

President Julia Glorius, a devout pacifist, was one of the most vocal supporters of the move. She believes that both divisions can continue their work "perfectly well" under the umbrella of the Federal Police Forces, stressing the small but important difference that they would now be considered as civilian, not military, law enforcement forces. "It sends a strong signal of our wish to maintain an absolute no-war policy, not only today, but also tomorrow", the President said, also reminding the sceptics that the policy is in harmony with that of Occoron, another important and well respected member of the European Union.

For the time being, no jobs are threatened by Actum Glorii. All 4000 employees of the Border Guard and 5000 sailors of the Coastal Guard will continue "as before", the Ministry of Defence and Security assured. The Ministry also confirmed that Pax Aurea is and will be "as safe as ever".

The demilitarization of Pax Aurea is not yet final, de iure -- the ceremonial Praetorian Guard of the Senate is still officially part of the Commonwealth Self-Defence Forces. The 200 men who present a familiar sight at the Senate Hall, still wearing their traditional Roman armour, tower shield, and swords, like two millennia before, are still in active service, for "ancient and beloved cultural reasons" -- and, undoutbedly, for tourism. They should not be confused with the Presidential Praetorian Guard, part of the Secret Service and responsible for the safety of the President.

Premier Commissioner Liszckoszi Back In Europolis

    Ianuarius XX, 2012 AD

All of Europe breathes a bit more easily as Premier Commissioner Maleeka Liszckoszi returned safely to Europolis, after being detained by the Imperial Oversector of Dromund Kaas. The exhausted Liszckoszi briefly described her abuse, interrogation, and torture in the hands of the Imperials, before wihdrawing to rest from her ordeals. In the meantime, Dr Michael Reed will continue to serve as the acting Premier.

Despite the Premier now being safe, tensions between the EU and Dromund Kaas have not abated. Political analysts now speculate that the incident will give new boost to the initiative to reorganize the long-dormant European Defence Force and the Security Council. The Council is also expected to reach a strictly worded resolution, quite possibly with heavy sanctions, against Dromund Kaas.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the sanctions and restrictions already placed by Pax Aurea will not be lifted "in the near future" despite the release of Mrs Liszckoszi, unless "considerable improvements" take place in the Union-Imperial relations.

    President Addresses The Nation

    Ianuarius XXII, 2012 AD

President Julia Glorius has addressed the nation today, talking about the most serious crisis in the European Union's history since Pax Aurea's petition for membership two years ago. The speech was broadcast live at 09:00 Aurean Isles time by the ABC.

"My fellow Aureans. Today, I speak to you with a heavy heart. A great tragedy has shaken the European Union, a disaster unlike anything we have seen in many, many years. The seeds of it were sown by the Imperial Oversector of Dromund Kaas when they so callously kidnapped and mistreated Premier Commissioner Maleeka Liszckoszi. Europe was filled with ire and lust for vengeance -- as was to be expected after such a shameful act. We hoped that calm and reason, diplomacy and political acumen would prevail, however... but sadly, we were wrong. Around midnight, very early on the 21st, the Duxburian Union declared war upon Dromund Kaas, initiating their attack with what appears to be three nuclear missile strikes. We are still waiting information from the Duxburians concerning these events, but it looks like these blasts occurred several dozens of kilometers in the atmosphere, and were not intended to hit ground targets."

The President went on emphasizing that every precaution is taken by the Aurean government to ensure that the impact of this nuclear exchange is as minor as possible to the Commonwealth itself. She urged all citizens to remain calm, listen carefully for the CDA and official government updates concerning the situation. While she stressed that there is no immediate danger to Pax Aurea, she predicted the attack would result in a humanitarian disaster of "biblical proportions".

"By what we have been able to gather thus far, it would appear the nuclear blasts caused what is known as an electromagnetic pulse. This pulse is extremely deadly against all electronic devices and systems, rendering the affected society practically devoid of all applications of electricity. For a nation of 350 million people like Dromund Kaas, it is a total, utter breakdown. Hospitals, communication networks, cars, garbage management -- everything simply shuts down. We are now facing an apocalyptic humanitarian crisis with hundreds of millions of people pushed back to the stone age. At this point, I can only speculate what will happen, but we as Aureans and human beings must do our utmost to aid our fellow men, women, and children in need -- no matter their nationality, ethnicity, creed, or colour."

The President was visibly upset during her speech. She promised that Pax Aurea would continue to work tirelessly in the halls of Europolis and strive for "a solution as fast as possible" for the crisis, and also voiced her outrage for the first-strike atomic attack.

"Pax Aurea cannot and will not accept the use of weapons of mass destruction, no matter the excuse behind them. These weapons are the blight of humanity, and in themselves a crime against everything we hold dear. This is a dark and shameful day for Europe."

CDA Continues To Monitor The Situation

The Civil Defence Administration has not yet detected any increases in levels of radiation in the Aurean Isles. These provinces would in all likelihood be the first to suffer from nuclear fallout. The CDA experts have nevertheless asked people to remain cautious, as the high altitude of the explosions will make it easier for the jetstreams (at 10 - 16 km) to spread the fallout far and wide. The CDA has also prepared iodine pills and clean, bottled water for distribution should there be any need for it.

    Europe Marches To War

Along with the Duxburian Union and the GTA, Angleter, the United Kingdom, and Rhine Ruhr have declared war on Dromund Kaas. Vox Populi will follow the development of the war and continue to report as new information becomes available.

    Foreign Minister Fulvius In London

Minister of Foreign Affair Maria Fulvius has arrived in London to discuss the ongoing crisis and the Duxburian nuclear attack with Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Fulvius replaced Glorius whose visit was prevented by the sudden emergence of the DK crisis.

    Millions March For Peace

    Ianuarius XXIII, 2012 AD

The Civil Defence Administration issued an all-clear fallout signal today. This announcement came after the Office of the President received what is described as "a detailed report" from the Duxburian Union concerning the three high-altitude nuclear detonations over Dromund Kaas. The CDA has assured it will continue to monitor the situation, but that at the moment there appears to be "no risk" for Pax Aurea getting contaminated by radioactive fallout.

As the fear for fallout passed, it seems to have been replaced by a nation-wide spirit of defiance, and deep compassion towards the people of Dromund Kaas -- something that would have been quite hard to anticipate only a few days earlier. In all major cities throughout the provinces, Aureans have marched to the streets to voice their protest against the shadow of war that now hangs over the European Union. Solemn processions, silent or singing throngs crowded the streets and forums as the movement spread like wildfire via the social media. By nightfall, hundreds of thousands of candles lit the cities. The police estimates that over three million people in various cities had taken part in the peace demonstration by 21:00 Pacifican time.

Protests for peace have also been reported in Brecon, where approximately one million people have denounced the attacks against Dromund Kaas.

Northern Caesarea may be the next nation to join the "coalition of the willing" against DK. Though the war declaration was defeated in Kryuland, six nations have already marched to war: the Duxburian Union, GTA, GDR, Angleter, Rhine Ruhr and the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Laois-Offaly has started to coordinate a massive humanitarian aid project for the civilian population of the EMP'd Dromund Kaas. Pax Aurea, Occoron, and Marrakechia have already expressed their willingness to assist, and Minister Lucius Telerius of Humanitarian Affairs has travelled to Frankenhalt, LO, for an efficient Aurean input.

    Harsh Criticism From Opposition

    Ianuarius XXIV, 2012 AD

Caius Victorius of Pars Romana has launched a full verbal assault against President Glorius. At a party rally today, Victorius called the President's latest moves as "both irrational and irresponsible".

"First we place heavy sanctions on Dromund Kaas, and only days later, we're already pouring millions of Aurean Marks to this same nation. And what is more, those same sanctions are still in place! I admit: I am confused, and rightly so, but I'm starting to suspect I'm not the only one in the Senate hall", Victorius claimed.

His most acrid lash was aimed at the Actum Glorii which did away the last branches of the Aurean military only days ago. "I have been saying this for years, and I keep saying it now: this was an enormous folly, a grave error. Pax Aurea should have kept its Self-Defence Force in good shape. While Europe is arming itself, we demolish the last assets of our defence! My opponents have called me a militarist, a war-mongerer even -- but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I wish that our Golden Peace would last as much as any good, decent, peace-loving Aurean, from the bottom of my heart I do. But how can we keep our beloved nation safe and secure from turmoil when we can't even effectively patrol our own territorial waters, let alone enforce law and order there? Once again I beg my fellow Senators: open your eyes, it's a predatory world out there, and if the events of the past few days have not proven it to you, then the Commonwealth's truly run by a gathering of fools!"

    No Change In Foreign Relations

    Ianuarius XXV, 2012 AD

The recent declarations of war and the formation of the military coalition is not going to bring "immediate changes" in Aurean foreign relations, says the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Though President Glorius condemned the HEMP nuclear strike of the Duxburian Union, and the war against Dromund Kaas has been generally opposed by the Proctus administration, the potential fallout of the overall development of the European politics remains to be seen. The Commonwealth's stock market has already become rather concerned over the last few days' international instability, and political analysts are presenting their own prognoses of its eventual impact in Aurean domestic politics.

    Pax Aurea Congratulates Unified Inquista

    Ianuarius XXVI, 2012 AD

After a bloody civil war and a nation torn in three, the European Microstate of Inquista has finally re-unified into a single nation. An overwhelming landslide of "yea" votes from North, South, and East Inquista ensured the end to the division that had separated family members and friends ever since the cessation of the Inquistan Civil War in 2010.

Archbishop Alexander Kligenberg, the current head-of-state of the nation, has been a vocal supporter of the unification process. Many Aureans of Inquistan ethnicity -- particularly those who left their homeland during or after the civil war -- speak very highly of the Archbishop, naming him as the key figure for the successful end of the division.

The Senate and the people of the Federal Commonwealth of Pax Aurea, and the entire staff of Vox Populi, wish to offer their sincerest congratulations to all Inquistans on this happy day of renewed peace and brotherhood.

    What About Sahara?

Another referendum is currently taking place in Western Sahara, and its outcome may indicate another major change in the atlas of Europe. After the defeat of the armed forces of the Polisario independentists, the Saharans have now been given a chance to democratically decide the fate of their region's autonomous status. The election for a Saharan body of representatives a week earlier saw the formation of a new regional government, with Hassan Lkhwaled becoming its first Prime Minister. Political specialists expect to see a strong support for autonomy being expressed in the referendum. The election and the referendum are anticipated to help stabilize the still uneasy peace of the province, but whether or not it eventually leads to the actual independence of Western Sahara remains still unclear. As part of Operation Hope, Aurean and Occoronian observers are monitoring the referendum process.

    Aureans To Become Extinct?

    Ianuarius XXVII, 2012 AD

The census for 2011 has been completed, with surprising results. For the first time in decades, the population count of Pax Aurea has stopped growing. The total increase in population was -0,1%, with the official count of Commonwealth citizens being 72 304 558 at 23:59 Aurean Isles time, December 31th 2011.

"This was actually quite expected in the Bureau of Census, as we've been keep telling to the public and politicians for years", explains Attilia Ganimio, chief researcher for the census. "Ever since 2000, the birth rates have been lagging behind the death rates; the only reason that our numbers have still been increasing, albeit meagerly, has been immigration."

The reasons, Ganimio says, are quite straightforward. "Aureans have smaller and smaller families. We marry late, and most get their firstborn children after the age of 30. This has been the growing trend ever since the 1950s, and it's not looking like we're about to see any quick changes in this in the near future, either. Moreover, the life expectancy of our citizens has improved rapidly over the last 50 years. We have more and more elderly citizens, more and more pass the 100 years milestone, but we have less younger people to look after them. In a decade or two, we're facing a true "retirement bomb", and by 2100, I fully expect that we see our overall population count halved. That is, of course, unless we do our best to increase immigration -- and get our young couples have more children!"

    Surveys Say: Go On, Julia!

    Ianuarius XXVIII, 2012 AD

The average of several surveys and gallups reveal that Aureans are supporting the recent humanitarian aid operations in Dromund Kaas with overwhelming numbers. This is also a relief to President Julia Glorius, who has lobbied for the dangerous and somewhat expensive program, and the expansion of the 2012's budget for the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. This has been possible mainly due to the surplus of the 2011's overall government budget.

Of the inquiried Aureans, approximately 80% are in favour of the DK aid, while only 5% are strongly opposed. 10% remain uncertain, while 5% were in favour of "some form of aid", but did not favour the current approach. 20.000 Aureans were questioned in five different surveys.

Many listed the President's emotional speech following the Duxburian HEMP attack as one of the most important reasons for their support. The general anti-war sentiment has also remained strong, despite the rash actions of the Imperial Oversector before the military campaigns and the birth of the "Coalition of the Willing".

Archbishop Alexander Kligenberg of Inquista Assassinated

    Ianuarius XXIX, 2012 AD

BREAKING NEWS -- Archbishop Alexander Kligenberg, the head of state of the recently unified Microstate of Inquista and the former Premier Commissioner, has died from an assassin's bullets.

The Archbishop was leading a Sunday Mass at St Francis Chapel during the attack. He was preaching in front of 23.000 people when the attacker struck without warning, wounding him mortally. Despite the best efforts of the medical personnel, Kligenberg died only moments after the attack at a nearby clinic.

The Inquistan news agency reports that the assassin has been detained and identified as one James Dauphin, a 19-year-old North Inquistan, who opposed Kligenberg's tolerant views and politics in the unification process.

    Pax Aurea Mourns Kligenberg

    Ianuarius XXX, 2012 AD

An undending line of of somber, solemn people, moving silently past the Inquistan embassy at Via Antiqua. Tears flow openly. Bouquets of flowers, candles, small scribbled notes are left at the main gate. As the night slowly falls, a silent sea of golden light blossoms around the embassy grounds.

Hundreds of immigrants of North, South, and East Inquistan origin have gathered to say their goodbyes to the assassinated Archbishop, who was to many a great national hero and a deeply revered religious figure. "It's thanks to him that we all are now just Inquistan", says Lorenz Palo, himself a former North Inquistan who moved to Pax Aurea after the outbreak of the Inquistan Civil War. "Look around you, we're all grieving here together, as one people. I believe the Archbishop, bless his soul, is seeing us, right here, right now, and smiling." Many more indigenous Aureans also joined their Inquistan neighbours.

The Senate held a silent moment today, honouring the memory of Mr Kligenberg. President Glorius said in a press release that Pax Aurea "weeps for the loss [of Kligenberg]", adding that she hoped his death would not threaten the unification of Inquista, but instead "strengthen the people in defence of peace, justice, and friendship".
