EUROPEAN ORDER OF MERIT, Edward Firoux (2023)
Nomination made by Council Speaker and Councillor Iras Tilkanas (Istkalen)

PREAMBLE

In recognition of his contributions to European law and to the development of modern European politics, former Council Speaker Edward Firoux shall hereby be awarded with the European Order of Merit.

SECTION I
I. The European Order of Merit will be given to Edward Firoux of the Most Blessed State of Inquista in recognition of his lengthy, productive, and influential service in European politics and the European Council.

SECTION II
I. Edward Firoux authored or co-authored a significant portion of the Acquis Communautaire, including the Council Code of Conduct (2019), the Safe and Accessible Water Act (2019), the Ocean Protection Act (2020), the European Health Organization Act (2020), the Net Neutrality Act (2020), and the European Neurodivergent and Disability Rights Act (2020).
II. Edward Firoux played a leading role in the development of the European Progressive Alliance, which remains a major force in European poltiics.

SECTION III
I. Edward Firoux will be presented with the European Order of Merit at an official ceremony in the European Council by the Premier Commissioner.

Anyone who has served in European politics for any amount of time will be familiar with the work of the esteemed former Councillor and Council Speaker Edward Firoux. His touch, his pen, is there in almost every aspect of the modern Union's politics. Much of the Acquis Communautaire is his work; the EPA and its influence, too, really his child.

It is time at last, I feel, to recognize his enormous contributions.

I know the act allows for Medals for doing your job but I won't be a part of voting for a medal for doing your job well. We are all thankful for Councillour Firoux and especially his efforts on the European Neurodivergent and Disability Rights Act which gives protections to 10's of millions of Europeans but it is at the end of the day his job to create and pass legislation. Why should a politician be given a medal for doing their job? This undermines the seriousness of any medal.I do not believe in medals for doing your job you are paid for as servants of the EU people.

As someone who had the inmense honour to work alongside former Speaker Firoux not only in the Council, but also as a member of the European Progressive Alliance, I can tell without a doubt that he deserves credit for his huge work and dedication to make a better European Union for all. Mr. Firoux was more than a simple Councillor and European lawmaker, he was also essential for the great functionment of the European Union and this chamber. Full support.
