    • A year of reign: President Okonkwo Cyryl Lavoie

      alt text
      President Okonkwo Cyryl Lavoie, above
alt text Brickston Democratic Union Party
Okonkwo Cyryl Lavoie is the current president of Brickston (as of 16/07/2021 in DD/MM/YY format). He was born on the 28th of June, but the year of his birth is not known. Some figures estimate him to be in the age range of 45-75.

State of Brickston before Lavoie's rule

Before Okonkwo Cyryl Lavoie's reign, the country had been following a protectionism trade policy, where regional products are preferred over international ones. The country had been recovering from the radical Maduro Communist Revolution (1912-1937).

Poverty rates declined over time, but the country was not making sufficient progress.

      Background of Mr. Lavoie

Mr. Lavoie was born in the town of Schmedeswurtherwester (present-day Lavoiewuschmedes). His parents couldn't afford to send him to school, as they had spent all their money to buy a home. Okonkwo's father worked in a sawmill and his mother was a basket weaver. Okonkwo had 2 brothers; Elias and Felix, both of which were younger than him (by 2 and 6 years respectively).

Okonkwo got offered a scholarship despite not having a history of education. He was offered a scholarship by the University of New Amsterdam. Mr. Lavoie recalls his life by saying, "I had a secret stash of textbooks which I used to get from my friends, whose families were richer than my family was."

President Lavoie took a science degree but moved on to take more subjects as the scholarship allowed him to do so. He received recognition while peeking through a 12th Grade math class. He could do calculus, unlike students in the class. He was 10 years old!

He finally took up politics and decided to be a politician.

Brickston's economy is often referred to as a "miracle" due to its rapid transformation from a developing country to a developed, high-income economy in a relatively short period of time. This transformation took place in the second half of the 20th century after the reunification of Brickland under the leadership of various presidents. Through reform, subsidisation and liberalisation, the country saw an economic revolution and became one of the wealthiest countries in the world, with high levels of income equality.

      Cities of Brickston

      1: Portovo

      alt text
Portovo from Parliament building, Capital of Brickston
Portovo is the administrative capital of Brickston, located near two rivers. The city hosts the Parliament and also has the second highest GDCP (Gross domestic city product) per capita after New Amsterdam according to the Briekish Government Statistics Bureau (BGSB), standing at 245,917D¥ (366416.33 Euros, 2021 estimate).

Portovo has the most scientists per square km in the world, with 4. Portovo is also one of the most diverse cities in the world, with only 39% of citizens being fully Briekish.

      2: Himmeruckend (Bridgeton)

      alt text
Himmerruckend (Bridgeton), Financial Capital of Brickston
Himmerruckend is the most populous city in Brickston. It is the financial capital of the country. Himmerruckend hosts the country's largest metro network (7th largest in the European Union), as well as the country's largest airport, stadium, GDP and road network. The city also contributes to 45% of the country's trade.

Bridgeton (the English name of Himmeruckend) is the largest metro area in the entire Arctic Belt, and handles the second-highest traffic of trade ships, after Doh Tin Mah City (the trading and manufacturing capital of Brickland). Due to westerly winds, it enjoys a mild summer climate throughout the year, and experiences warmer winters alike the rest of the Briekish southern coast. This weather phenomenon, termed the "Briekish weather abnormality", allows for habitation in these areas, and also causes some regions in the geographic south to have harsher winters than the Southwest coast (this effect ceases to exist in the far North, where harsh winters are prevalent).

The city used to be a farming and fishing village during the communist era, but later played a key role in economic liberalisation when it was a part of the country of the now-unified North Brickston, serving as the first special economic zone for foreign direct investment and free trade.

It is home to many major European software and financial companies, and is granted the largest city budget by the federal government.

3: Doh Tin Mah City (DTM Metro Area)

      alt text
Streets in Doh Tin Mah City, the trade and manufacturing capital of Brickston

The DTM metro area is the manufacturing hub of Brickston, with the bulk of electronics, high-precision equipment, semiconductors, and computer processing parts produced here. However, Doh Tin Mah City also has a thriving agricultural sector, with methods such as rooftop agriculture being used by individuals and companies, due to the population density resulting in a scarcity of land. Doh Tin Mah City hosts the Marius Tower (Briekish Intelligence Bureau Headquarters).

The city was named by Sir Doh Tin Mah, who led the Briekish Revolution to guarantee freedom of speech for all.

In order to increase business competitiveness, the metro area has the lowest business taxes in the country, and less strict regulations for corporations, especially those in manufacturing.

      4: Edgemorta (Gänserntal)

      alt text
      Financial District, Edgemorta
Edgemorta is the resource capital of Brickston, with oil and uranium extraction areas clustered near the city. It serves as the headquarters for major petroleum companies, which employ around 36% of the local adult population. Edgemorta had been suffering economic decline until economic reforms including reducing taxes in the metro area gave it a competitive advantage in business.

      5: Yormanes (Waldenmundigen)

      alt text
      Streets of Yormanes, Brickland

Yormanes is a suburban medium-density settlement with the highest concentration of Michelin-star restaurants in the country. It is a thriving retail hub, and is sometimes referred to as the arts and entertainment capital.

The 6 economic zones put together house more than 80% of Brickston's population and more than 85% of the country's GDP.

These economic zones have their own regional council and are semi-autonomous. They hold their own elections and create their own budget with the judiciary overlooking and approving it.

    • A chronology of Briekish Modern Age History

1699: The southern parts of modern day Brickston are annexed under the Bricksvvad Empire through a 22 year bloody war. Long guns and explosive bombs are developed for usage.
1702: The Kingdom of Bricksvvad expands its territory to span parts of Northern Europe. The Furtyr (King Nikolas II) and the Furtystär (Queen Jennifer IV) (King and Queen respectively) live extravagant lifestyles, while 91% of the Briekish Population lives with wages under one coin a month.
1704: The Furtyr is assassinated by Sir Felix Ardwin, an intellectual. Shortly after, Sir Ardwin is sentenced to death and a new Furtyr comes to power, who is crowned as King Anderrsen the 1st.
1709: The Furtyr introduces a set of dictatorial laws called the Anderssen Passages. These passages put the population of Bricksvvad into three systems of taxation: the Church, the Nobles and the Peasants. The church and the nobles are exempted from paying taxes. The Church of Brickston is the only religion to be practiced.
1710: Rushafter (the capital of Bricksvvad) experiences an uprising for a democratic system. Every protester is beheaded.
1711-1713: The nobles, who all live in Doh Tin Mah City are assassinated, including the Furtyr and the Furtystär over a period of 3 years with massive uprisings.
September 12th, 1713: A new national assembly is formed which works somewhat democratically, with the only difference being that the church is the supreme authority.
1714: The Anderssen Passages are officially abolished but the church is still exempted from paying taxes.
1715: Leaders are elected for the first time, but with only Men of Property being allowed to vote. Sir Walter is elected to be the leader of the country.
1716-1717: The Battle of Terrista (under Bricksvvad) takes place in river Terrista, which is a river between modern-day Brickston and Belarum. Bricksvvad reaches its extent peak, at more than 456,000 square kilometres of land.
1718: A radical religious group riots and kills everyone with affiliation with the democratic system. The Church of Brickston is now the supreme authority, and leaders are no longer elected. All non-believers are killed or imprisoned and symbols of other religions are banned.
1721: The Briekish Monarchy comes to power with approval of the Church. King Rwesta XI comes to power.
1724: The Briekish Colonial Empire is established through the Briekish Trade Company.
1756: The country is now named "Brixton". All members of the commonwealth (colonized territories) must abide by the rules of Brixton.
1789: The Briekish Trade Company is removed and Queen Rwestus XI is now the direct ruler, with the King dying on the same year.
1803: The Brixton Commonwealth reaches its extent.
1804: A small island called Samoros is granted semi-autonomy, but many in the territory suggest freedom.
1833: The treasury of Brixton is empty amid outrage of increasing taxes.
1845: Thousands of colonies gain independence as Brixton has no money to subsidize the empire.
1846: The leader is overthrown by a tyrannical and religious leader who has to be called "The Messenger of God".
1867: The leader is overthrown and an entirely democratic republic is formed.
1877: The Republic of Brickston is formed.
1888: Corruption is at its peak with an almost empty treasury. Brickston's citizens live in worse conditions.
1891-1907: An Inflation Crisis, with only the richest being able to afford bread.
1908-1916: Famines take place amid reports of Brickston being the poorest country in Europe.
1918: Brickston reaches the lowest point in its economy, with 96% of the population having an income of lesser than 20,000 Dubbehs (it is important to note that back then, 1 Dubbeh's exchange rate was 0.0027, while today's rate is 1 Dubbeh = $1.74)
1921: A fascist and communist regime is developed under Schneider Van Maduro, who removes the democratic constitution.
1922: All Briekish businesses are now owned by the government; all multinational and international trade is destroyed.
1923: Maduro establishes the "Maduro Passages" (a propaganda-based book based on self-reliance and destroying capitalism).
1926: Secularism is deemed compulsory. Leaving the country is banned.
1927: A new group of business owners, mostly from the Northern parts of Brickston, start creating trade unions to remove communism from Brickston. This movement couldn't spread to the southern parts of Brickston due to there being more Maduro supporters there.
1929: The rising tensions between the North and the South resulted in a war breaking out, with many European Capitalist nations backing the North, and communist nations backing the South.
1931: A partial peace treaty is signed between the North and the South, making the two regions sovereign countries, with the capital being split equally between the two countries.
1932: Instability rises in Edgemorta due to it being a part of South Brickston (also the largest city and the capital of the country).
1933: South Brickston officially named, "The Briekish Democratic Republic", or BDR.
1934: North Brickston is 3 times richer than South Brickston by income, and is an industrious member of Europe. Infrastructure in Southern Brickston is outdated and the BDR asks North Brickston for a 2 billion dollar loan. North Brickston declines.
1935: Maduro dies due to a heart attack; the peace treaty is no longer in effect.
1936: Edgemorta is nuked by North Brickston, officially ending the war. The North and the South are reunited to form the Republic of Brickston on the 3rd of November, 1936.
1938: A democratic constitution is officially executed on June the 20th, 1938.
1940: Brickston undergoes a socialist mixed economy, where banking, finance and transport sectors are owned by the government.
1942: Doh Tin Mah City is replaced by Hugoslavia to be the capital of Brickston.
1945: An lingual conflict in Edgemorta, where civilians riot due to the government mandating English as an official language. The Government fires at the protesters, symbolizing that Brickston needs more free speech (the actually functional constitution was dismantled unofficially due to the government's corruption). This significant event, taking place on April the 16th, is known as Symbol für Verfassungsänderangen, or "Constitution Modification Symbol".
1946: Maduro found to not be dead; the current government favoured him for a reason.
1947: Radicals come to power, who assassinate Maduro and every human associated with him.
1948: A parliament is established; heavily monitored
1949: A new actually democratic constitution is established, with a Supreme Authority (S.A) having impartial candidates, and legislation being monitored by the S.A. It is thought by economists that this was when Brickston opened up to the world.
1951: Brickston is officially a constitutional democratic republic.
1953: The Republic of Brickston sees immense growth, and is no longer the poorest country in Europe.
1956: Brickston establishes a neutral policy, which seeks impartiality in military and foreign relations. Trade is not included in this policy.
1957: An attempted invasion from another offshore nation in Doh Tin Mah City ends with a certain win on Brickston's side.
1962: First airport built in Brownhill, Vauxhavzen (this province no longer exists; Brownhill has been incorporated into the Special Administrative Territory of Portovo)
1964: Large explosion kills hundreds in Portovo Parliament; the Briekish Presidency for Security Headquarters is used for 12 years.
1965: The mind behind the Parliament Incident is found and arrested; the data extracted suggested that he was a foreign spy.
1967: Parliament reconstructed 2 kilometres away from the original - a memorial to commemorate the original parliament is built.
1969: Marked 20 years of the democratic and sovereign Brickston.

Brickston strengthens relations with its neighbours

      Felix Addenburg
Brickston's new influence in the European Union comes with a larger economy. Unlike the report a month ago which suggested a plummet in the Briekish Economy, economists now predict a 4% growth in the economy for the next quarter. This is huge for a developed country.

Much of this growth comes from loosening business restrictions due to a policy that was repealed 2 weeks ago by the Briekish Supreme Authority. To add to that, many nations are interested to trade with a nation rich in oil, uranium and gold reserves.

However, a growing threat in Brickston is the age demographic. Brickston has an ageing population. However, the population of the youth is seeing signs of growth, with more than 400,000 people entering the workforce every year.

ECONOMISTS PREDICT A PLUMMET IN THE BRIEKISH ECONOMY.

      By Felix Addenburg
Fredierk Seawell has often criticized the Briekish economy for being too reliant on the tourism industry, which is his reasoning for a hypothetical plummet in the economy in the next few years. The tourism industry has performed at its worst since 25 years ago.

Mr. Seaswell added, "To prevent a recession, the government should prioritize lower taxation rates and privatize industries.

Biography: Young Margaret Thatcher was born in a rural village in the province of Orsemorco (present-day Osetham) in communistic South Brickston. When she was a child, she always wanted to be a doctor but her parents insisted that she'd be a taxi driver (her disposable salary would be higher if she were to be a taxi driver under the South Brickston system of taxes and salaries). She was very bright as a young child, and was seemingly attached to 6th grade algebra textbooks while she was just in second grade. As a teenager, she would write about her daily life, including how she and her parents successfully escaped South Brickston through the Portovo Wall on a cold winter night. The sorrowful string of the story was that her father was caught in the wall and sent to prison. It was for 23 years that she did not she her father. She soon received a scholarship in the University of Amsterdam, a prestigious university (also called "Grande Stettlemorgen Universitat") to study medicine and law. She also started a business, something she couldn't do in South Brickston, and managed finances to also be a politician.
