Europe Day Act
-
Debate on this act starts NOW and will last until 22:00 GMT on August 11th, 2020.
I fully support this piece of legislation. Europe Day is a great idea!
Edward Firoux
Council Speaker and Councillor for Inquista -
I also support this piece of legislation, and I would like to thank Internal Affairs Commissioner, Jean-Claude Juncker, for this idea. This proofs that the European Commission is interested in the European project and also wants to expand that ideology called Europeism, which makes Europe to come closer, even though some oppose to it and others just ask their Government for exit the EU. Let's hope this works and we bring back the EU together.
Donald D. Tusk
Councillor for Spain -
From the ruins and ashes in which wars left Europe submerged, the founding fathers and mothers managed to carry out a formidable mission, the establishment of peace and sense of community we have overcome. But today we are seeing an uprising of situations that could lead us astray from this commitment.
None of these problems will go away, but there have been different ways of reacting to them: some countries are turning into authoritarian regimes, others are buying their global influence and creating dependencies through investments in ports and roads. And others are leaning towards protectionism.
Neither of these options is valid for us. We want multilateralism, we want a
fair trade, we defend a rule-based order because we know that it is better for
all of us. We have to do it with the European way of acting. But if we want to move on the European path, we must first rediscover our unity. Yes we are internally united, no one will divide us from the outside. If we solve the differences that exist between us, we can turn today's challenges into the opportunities of tomorrow. This is an excelent piece of legislation to remind us, that only together we shall overcome. That our values are what binds us together, and our sense of pride of being Europeans what shines on us. As Cllr. Tusk says I also believe in Europeism as an ideology to come together.
Friends and colleagues let's celebrate together who we are and cherish this day as celebration for our values.
Emma Granger
Councillor for Montenbourg -
Pravoslaviya welcomes the idea of a day to recognise and raise awareness of the EU; although we wonder whether there might be more appropriate days than May 9th.
That said, we will not redistribute one of its public holidays so that, instead of commemorating the birth of Christ, or the Dormition of the Theotokos, or the glorious martyrdom of the patriots who gave their lives for Pravoslaviya in the war of 2001, we celebrate the EU. Therefore, I would like to propose the following amendment:
Section I, Clause III: Remove entire clause
Cllr Tupac Shakur
-
Mr. Juncker, I genuinely like your proposal. The European Day had to be there already. It will give a recognition to our unity, our perseverance to maintain and protect the best for our citizens. You have my support on this.
Mrs. Azaya Dubecq
EU Councilor for the Republic of Nofoaga -
I may definitely agree that this could be a step to further European Integration. But, I don't think this would be enough to reunite our diversified community. And let's face it, Europe needs a change. We must act quickly if we want a truly united Europe. Let us give each other respect, for our beliefs, ideologies, ideas, and etc. I hope that we would achieve our glory days once again!
Friedrich van Allen
Councilor, Kingdom of Reitzmag -
I don't see any harm in having a holiday that celebrates the European Union, but the arbitrary choice of date makes no sense. The EU has no special attachment to the date chosen.
Therefore, I present an amendment to move Europe Day to the 206th of the year, which I believe would correspond to July 25th on your weird Gregorian calendar. That is the anniversary of the refounding of the European Union. The original founding date has been lost to time, but we know the refounding date and could celebrate that as our overall regional anniversary.
Amendment:
SECTION I - EUROPE DAY
I. Europe Day shall be celebrated every year on July 25th.Wesley Greene
Councillor of the Duxburian Union -
I quite like the date that Councillor Greene has picked. That is a date much more relevant and meaningful to our Union.
Edward Firoux
Council Speaker and Councillor for Inquista -
I would like to thank every councillor that has shown support to this proposal, and I would like to make some rebbutals to some councillors that added some statements that I would like to answer.
Councillor Shakur, it would be a great idea that the Europe Day would be a holiday in every country. People could attend to diverse celebrations around your country if people celebrates this day, and even they could make a travel to Europolis where we would have different events related with this very special day. Bringing back the European Union together is not just celebrating Europe day, is getting as much people as possible united in the celebrations so we can show to our allied regions that we are united despite the events that we are going through.
Councillor van Allen, as I said, just getting an Europe Day won't unite us, but the celebrations will. I think that the first ever European Assembly meeting has united the European Union a bit more than before it, and the celebrations that we would host at the European Capital, Europolis, would make us be even more united as many people from all around Europe could come and celebrate with us.
And finally, Councillor Greene, that date you have proposed is a better idea than mine, and I want to say I support your amendment and I would like to thank you for this really good proposal, as it would celebrate a much more relevant date.
Jean-Claude Juncker
Commissioner for Internal Affairs -
Mr. Juncker I oppose that it would just be celebrated in Europolis. I think that it should be celebrated everywhere in the EU. Everyone shall have the right to celebrate the founding of this institution that had brought us closer together.
Friedrich van Allen
Councilor, Kingdom of Reitzmag -
I think you have misunderstood me. The main celebrations are being hosted in Europolis, but anyone can celebrate the Europe day everywhere, we are not forbiding anyone to celebrate Europe Day whenever they want to. I'm just saying that Commission would celebrate it in Europolis and will invite everyone to attend.
Jean-Claude Juncker
Commissioner for Internal Affairs -
